Job description

Have you imagined yourself in a role where you can serve the people of California through education, regulation and enforcement actions regarding the manufacture, sale, ownership, safety training, and transfer of firearms and dangerous weapons? Does a role that includes conducting statewide training and providing information to licensed firearm dealers interest you? If so, we hope you consider applying for a Field Representative within our Bureau of Firearms.

Among other things, a Field Representative in our Regulatory Compliance Unit will perform the following tasks:

  • Independently plans, schedules, conducts statewide inspections of California licensed firearm dealers to ensure compliance with state firearm laws and regulations.
  • Communicates with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms investigators regarding inspection findings or referrals.
  • Provides training to various stakeholders regarding reporting, California firearm laws and regulations, and other firearm related responsibilities.

Candidates interested in taking on this challenge should have: a willingness to travel via airplane and/or automobile for up to two weeks per month and occasionally work odd shifts such as evenings, weekends, and nights.

Working Conditions

DOJ has temporarily adopted telework for employees who can effectively perform their essential work functions remotely. After an initial training period, this position will allow for some telework opportunities. All telework schedules are temporary, based on current conditions and will be re-evaluated as conditions change.

  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, diplomacy in dealing with law enforcement agencies and the public.
  • A familiarity with Microsoft Excel, SharePoint, Word and PowerPoint software programs.

Special Personal Characteristics: Demonstrated ability to act independently; flexibly; tact, excellent organization, maintain effective work habits, a verifiable record of dependability; and excellent public speaking skills are essential to be successful in this position.
