The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, and community green spaces across the country.
Overall Dates: 6/5/24 to 8/27/24 (including tree planting event, training, preparation, and administrative tasks before and after the crew dates)
Training Dates: 6/10/24 to 6/23/24 (paid mandatory training, location TBD)
Program Dates: 7/8/24 to 8/23/24 (crew dates)

Primary Responsibilities:
Co-lead, supervise, transport, and mentor a team of 12 high school youth, ages 14-19, for seven weeks, from 7/8/24 to 8/23/24 (7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). Before and after the crew dates, leaders will prepare for the program, conduct site visits, and complete administrative tasks. During the program, leaders and crew members will complete an assortment of hands-on conservation projects, potentially including trail construction and rehabilitation, general trail management, natural resource enhancements, and invasive species removal across multiple partner sites in the Seattle area. Leaders will plan and lead weekly educational field trip days and integrate career exploration, leadership development, and team building. Crew leaders will also be expected to facilitate an environmental education curriculum, which will be provided. Administrative and reporting duties are required, including data management, photo documentation, and youth assessments. Leaders will travel with the crew outside of the Seattle metro area to participate in a 3-day/2-night camping recreation and work trip. The trip will take place from August 7 to August 9. Leaders will also assist program staff to lead a volunteer tree planting event before leader training (6/5 to 6/7).
Specifically, the Crew Leader will:
- Act as a CrewSupervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics
- Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship
- Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA
- Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff
Leader Qualifications:
- Experience working with youth or young adults. Teaching or environmental education experience a plus
- Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferred, i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, carpentry, landscaping, gardening, etc.
- Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
- Must be able to attend Crew Leader training (see above)
- Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and CPR training provided as part of training
- Valid Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification a plus
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
- Must have the ability to work legally in the US
- Must have a valid driver's license for 3+ years and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) that meets SCA standards
- Must have personal housing arrangements in the Seattle metro area; preference will be given to candidates already located in and familiar with the area
Leader Benefits and Compensation:
- $900/week total salary
- Paid SCA Crew Leader training, including conservation work skills (travel, room, and board included)
- CPR training provided by SCA (~$90 value)
- Wilderness First Aid (WFA) training provided by SCA (~$300 value)
- Monthly cell phone service reimbursement ($45/month)
