The Fiber Utility Locatorwill join our team and help maintain our underground fiberoptic network with a focus on damage prevention. The Locator will be responsible for locating, identifying, and marking our fiberoptic cables, using specialized equipment and techniques. The Locator will ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards, communicate with contractors and customers, and prepare accurate reports and documentation. This is full time year-round position.
Responsibilities
- Perform research and analysis of utility maps, records, and permits to determine the location of underground utilities
- Use electronic locating devices, such as electromagnetic induction (EMI), or acoustic methods, to locate and mark the position and depth of underground utilities and fiberoptic cables
- Use spray paint, flags, or stakes to mark the location of utilities and fiberoptic cables on the surface
- Coordinate with contractors, customers, and other stakeholders to provide information and assistance regarding the location of utilities and fiberoptic cables
- Establish relationships with excavators to promote safe digging practices
- Follow safety procedures and guidelines to prevent damage to underground utilities and fiberoptic cables, as well as injury to self and others
- Report any damages, irregularities, or hazards related to underground utilities and fiberoptic cables
- Utilize ticket management software to manage and document dig requests
- Maintain and calibrate locating equipment and tools
- Complete and submit accurate and timely reports and records of locating activities
- Be on call for responding to after-hours emergency locate requests as needed
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
- Previous experience as a Utility Locator or in a related field
- Knowledge of underground utility systems and fiberoptic network installation
- Proficiency in using electronic locating equipment and tools
- Ability to read and interpret utility maps, blueprints, and diagrams
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Ability to work in various weather conditions and terrains
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. throughout the workday.
- Strong communication and customer service skills
