SALARY: $51,757.89 - $82,812.62

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This position may be filled with either a FF/EMT or a FF/Paramedic. Individual will perform skilled technical work in the County Public Safety Department in the field of fire suppression, prevention, and emergency medical services. They will also perform professional EMT or Paramedic duties of a varied nature under the direction of superior officer. This is a provisional status for those certified as FF/EMT’s. If not a current FF/Paramedic upon hire, you will be required to become a FF/Paramedic within two years from the date of hire.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Lays, connects and places hose line in operation. Raises and climbs ladders. Enters building and other fire involved areas. Uses extinguisher, bars, hooks, lines and axes and other hand equipment. Ventilates burning buildings and structures. Throws salvage covers and removes debris.
2. Makes regular inspections of apparatus and equipment and notifies supervisor of defects. Conducts routine maintenance and apparatus check-out as required.
3. Drives and operates all rescue equipment as directed.
4. Makes visual and physical inspections of buildings to locate fire hazards.
5. Rescues and removes individuals from danger. Administers emergency medical treatment to sick, injured or afflicted persons.
6. Makes periodic inspections of buildings to locate fire hazards.
7. Performs physical cleaning and maintenance tasks on department buildings and equipment using brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, etc. Performs hydrant maintenance.
8. Attends training and drill sessions in such subjects as firefighting and inspection methods, equipment operations and emergency medical treatment.

FIREFIGHTER/EMT
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the street locations, geography, and types of construction in the County
- Knowledge of Emergency Medical procedures, practices, and techniques
- Knowledge of the various types of fire hazards of the County
- Knowledge and skill in the use of emergency medical treatment practices
- Knowledge of firefighting techniques, policies, procedures, and practices
- Ability to learn and perform many and varied firefighting techniques and procedures
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions
- Ability to work at heights and drive fire apparatus over the road safety under emergency conditions
- Skill in the use and maintenance of firefighting equipment
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of the positions of firefighter and driver engineer and the skills to perform the duties of each
- Knowledge of the geography of the County with respect to streets, hydrants and building access information
- Knowledge of the location and layout of all high risk and special hazard occupancies, and the problems encountered with each
- Knowledge of the strategy and tactics of handling fire, rescue, and medical emergencies and the ability to analyze and respond effectively under stress to each
- Knowledge of the record keeping system in use, the components of the system, and the functions of each
- Knowledge of paramedic principles, practices, and techniques and how they are used in rescue operations
- Ability to carry out orders and to see that Department and County policies are adhered to
- Ability to perform Firefighter and ALS duties effectively and work rotating shift assignments
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High school graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Completion of minimum standards as required by the State of Florida. Successful completion of all medical and fitness requirements.
(A comparable amount of training, education, or experience can be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:
Possess a valid Class “E” Driver’s License; State of Florida Firefighter Certification as authorized by F.S. 633; State of
Florida EMT or Paramedic Certification; 16 hour EVOC; Current CPR Certification.
