Summary
- Oversee all aspects of farrowing to ensure weekly full-value pig targets are achieved.
- Ensure that ALL animals across the farrowing area have received proper feed, water, ventilation, and bedding on a daily basis, and 100% of all NR protocols and guidelines are followed.
- Assist with any other aspect of the farm as requested to ensure farm goals and targets are met and tasks are completed on a daily basis.
Principal and Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Provide an ideal environment for farrowing and lactating sows and piglets by ensuring proper seasonal adjustments are made such as ventilation, bedding, and wallows.
- Ensure proper procedures are followed for Day-One pig care and fostering in order to maximize the number of full value pigs and minimize the number of problems litters.
- Efficiently process piglets in accordance with company procedures
- Efficiently vaccinate piglets and prepare weaning in accordance with company procedures.
- Proper treatment/care of sows in farrowing
- Ensure feeding program aligns with stage of lactation and season.
- Maintain cleaning/bedding of all farrowing huts.
- Maintain and clean waters, feeders, and fences.
- Keep, communicate, and report accurate records on a daily basis.
- Notify and discuss openly with management any problems, concerns, or questions.
- Recognize and manage unique situations that require special attention or treatment.
- Maintain a clean/ orderly appearance around the office/ farm.
- Conserve farm resources such as supplies, equipment, and time.
- Anticipate and prevent problems whenever possible rather than allowing problems to develop and progress and then reacting to them.
- Communicate openly and freely with others.
- Any other duties as assigned, requested, or directed by management/supervisor.
Minimum Education
- Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent
- B.S. degree in Animal Science or related field, OR minimum of one-year experience in straw-bedded pork production system, OR minimum of two years’ experience in traditional pork production.
Experience Requirements
- 3 - 5 years experience. Must be proficient in Microsoft Office suite of programs and have the ability to learn a web based database. Computer proficiency is required. Must posses extremely skillfull communication and organizational skills. Maintain a valid driver's license. Must have the ability to productively work from a home-based office and perform the travel required within set territory.
Experience Preferred
- 3-5 years’ experience in swine production centered around farrow to finish preferred.
Environmental Factors and Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
- Ability to lead by example and manage a team of 2-5 people.
- Ability to problem solve, be a critical thinker, goal oriented, and a team player.
