Farm Manager

POSITION TITLE: Farm Manager

REPORTS TO: Farm Owners

SUPERVISES: Part time labor

REVISION DATE: November 2022

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for overseeing and undertaking the duties necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the Farm. The position requires strong personal organization and scheduling skills, as well as a desire for physical labor in an outdoor setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Goat Herd

- Tend daily (other than weekends), manage purchasing of feed and necessary supplies

- Ensure proper diet, shots, and care (including hoof trimming)

- Ensure proper maintenance of goat shelters, including cleaning

- Rotate stock as needed, including creation of new pasture as required

- Ensure proper breeding, including blood line considerations

- Manage sales of goats, including customer acquisition

Chicken Flock

- Tend daily (other than weekends), manage purchasing of feed and necessary supplies

- Ensure proper maintenance of chicken coops, including cleaning

- Purchase and raise new chickens to manage size of flock

- Prepare eggs for sale

- Manage sales of eggs, including customer acquisition

Christmas Tree Farm

- Planting trees in the spring (approximately 300/year)

- Mowing, weed whacking, trimming, and weeding tree farm

- Maintaining fencing for tree farm

- Manage sales of trees at wholesale, including customer acquisition

Hay Farm

- Cutting, raking, ,baling, gathering, and storing hay two times per year

- Building/maintaining hay storage facilities

- Manage sales of hay, including customer acquisition

Forestry and Fire Wood

- Attend to dead trees, whether requiring felling or already fallen

- Buck trees and prepare for firewood

- See to the hauling, splitting, and storage of firewood

- Manage sales of firewood, including customer acquisition

Equipment and Machine Maintenance

- Carrying out regularly scheduled user maintenance

- Scheduling and tracking professional maintenance, manage interface with service providers

Property Maintenance and Groundskeeping

- Fence building/repair/maintenance

- Animal shelter building/repair/maintenance

- Hay storage shelter building/repair/maintenance

- Bushhogging, mowing, weed whacking

- Maintenance and cleaning of event pavilion

- Ensure safe burning of burn pit on annual basis

- Other duties as assigned

Oversee part time labor

- Asses part time labor needs to support all of the above and budget on month-to-month basis

- Oversee part time labor in the execution of the above

LIMIT OF AUTHORITY:

- Authority to spend within pre-approved budgets, monthly or otherwise as determined by operating practices of the Farm.

- Does not have authority to contractually bind Farm.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

- Vocational or Bachelor degree in farm management or similar program, combined with 2 years of relevant farm experience, or

- 4-6 years of relevant farm experience.

Ability to work under stress, interruptions, deadlines and the ambiguity associated with farming.

Independent judgement to identify necessary action and initiative to undertake it.

Ability to prioritize work, problem solve, and communicate proficiently in verbal and written forms.

ESSENTIAL TECHNICAL/MOTOR SKILLS:

Ability to converse and write in a knowledgeable manner.

Ability to use Microsoft Office applications, including Word for drafting documents, Powerpoint for making presentations, Excel for creating budgets and plans, and Exchange for email communication.

ESSENTIAL SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to make notes from discussions and follow through.

Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with supervisors, co-workers, and various customers.

INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Ability to interact effectively supervisors, co-workers and customers.

Ability to interact effectively with co-workers in order to prioritize workflow, request assistance if needed and assist others in achieving goals.
