This is a new role created as part of a long-term succession plan to develop the tax organization to manage growth by adding capacity and to prepare for natural succession that eventually and inevitably occurs. For over 30 years, the current Managing Tax Director has been responsible for the tax function for both the Family Office and the private equity funds managed by an investment advisory affiliate. Due to continued growth and complexity, the succession plan includes bifurcating the responsibilities for the family and fund work. The Family Office Tax Director will report to the current Managing Tax Director and the Family Office CFO and will work closely with the Private Equity Fund CFO, new Fund Tax Director, and outside counsel & accounting firms to oversee trust & estate planning and tax compliance work. In this role, the Family Office Tax Director will assist the Managing Tax Director with providing strategic tax planning advice and tax compliance services to a multi-generational office. This position is part of a succession plan that will have the benefit of the Managing Tax Director being in place for several years to ensure a smooth transition of knowledge and duties leading to ultimate responsibility for overseeing all aspects of tax planning, compliance, and research for all individuals, trusts, pass-through entities, a foundation, and S-Corporation administered by the Family Office. Under the guidance of the Managing Tax Director and Family Office CFO, the Family Office Tax Director will work closely with the family’s T&E attorney and outside accounting firm to implement strategic tax initiatives. This position will work toward overseeing the development of internal staff and ensure training and development plans align with the Family Office needs. The structure is comprised of 14 family members, 3-5 closely held investment partnerships/S-Corps, 1 operating S-Corp, and approximately 50 Trusts. A successful candidate will have extensive experience with high-net-worth tax planning/compliance and will be familiar with private equity and alternative investment fund structures.
Major Responsibilities:
· Help establish the strategic direction for our tax planning and tax compliance functions. This will include assessing industry best practices.
· Help oversee the coordination of tax compliance work and review all Family Office related tax returns.
· Help manage tax planning projects for the family. This includes collaborating with internal and external advisors for a full understanding of the family needs, conducting research, preparing an analysis and strategic recommendation, and ultimately overseeing the implementation of that advice to create tax efficiencies.
· Apply knowledge to understand potential tax issues and will be able to recognize and communicate potential risks and changes in tax law and make top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal / state agencies.
· Evaluate and select alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance.
· Identify different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues.
· Conduct meetings that address technical and administrative matters, as well as provide a forum for new ideas and initiatives.
· Manage tax compliance staff and assess needs for the department to function efficiently from both a human capital and technology perspective.
· Help manage relationships with outside tax advisors and legal counsel.
· Assess current company best practices to improve efficiency.
· Other ad-hoc duties as assigned.
Ideal Experience:
· At least 15 years of relevant experience culminating in the position today as Family Office Tax Director of a sophisticated Family Office. This individual’s experience may come from a prior Family Office role or from being a senior Tax Director or partner in a public accounting firm managing High Net Worth families.
· Experience re-engineering and improving processes and infrastructure, and identifying and putting long-term, best-in-class solutions into place.
· Strong technical knowledge of individual, trust & estate, closely help partnership tax and accounting.
· Strong technical knowledge of tax software and related systems.
· Strong educational and professional credentials, which may include:
o Bachelor’s degree in accounting, taxation, or finance.
o Master’s Degree in Taxation a plus
o CPA Certification.
· Experience working with high net-worth individuals, trusts and foundations and strong management and leadership skills.
