Job description

Stanford University is seeking two Family Care Advocates to provide direct one-on-one training and assistance to families of children with developmental needs at Ayudando Latinos A Soñar (ALAS), ALAS Equity Express Bus, and partner clinic sites. Families will be mostly Hispanic/Latino, often using Medi-Cal as their primary health insurance. With the aid of the Family Care Advocates, activated and prepared families will connect to their Regional Center, Family Resource Center, other critical community-based resources, and any additional medical care. The Family Care Advocates will identify children at-risk for developmental delays, perform developmental screening, support families in referral processes to Golden Gate Regional Center, San Andreas Regional Center, local community service agencies, educational services, mental health services, and specialty medical services. Family Care Advocates will support families in completion of paperwork required for referrals and specialty services.
The Division of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics at Stanford School of Medicine is a nationally recognized and experienced interdisciplinary team of pediatricians, nurses, and psychologists, with access to social workers, occupational therapists, and speech-language pathologists within Stanford Medicine Children's Health. We have an established relationship with ALAS, including an ongoing community-embedded DBP telehealth clinic that supports families identified by ALAS staff as having need for DBP services. We also have relationships with clinicians at Federally Qualified Health Centers in Santa Cruz County who perform routine developmental screening and surveillance. The Family Care Advocates who are bilingual/bi-cultural or from marginalized communities will expand our capacity to serve children and families at a critical juncture in their journey towards identification and treatment of developmental delays.
Duties include:
• Serves as a non-clinical resource and liaison for patient family and assists with navigating all aspects of the healthcare system.
• Provides coaching to assure patient family understands referral processes; assists family in finding accurate, current information; guides family to parent skills-training that can be used at home; empowers family to evaluate child's intervention plan holistically; and provides emotional support to reduce stress.
• Connects patient family to regional centers and family resource centers; coordinates communication across sectors and agencies/organizations; and help family access Regional Center, educational, mental health, ABA and generic services.
• Administers and scores questionnaires and surveys at selected time points to evaluate the patient family's stress and sense of competence.

  • Provides accurate and timely documentation of participant interactions.
  • Assists in preparing reports of activities for manuscripts and funder requirements.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the University reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs. The pay range for this position working in the California Bay area is between $27.40 - $36.54.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working as a community health worker.
  • Identification is shared with the communities we will serve, including bilingual capacity in English and Spanish, African-American or black race, history of using public health insurance (Medi-Cal).
  • Communication skills and/or experience working with families under stress (eg, food insecurity, health challenged, etc.).
  • Experiences locating appropriate resources and services for assistance of family needs in a timely manner.
  • Ability to provide compassionate, empathetic responses to stress and guidance for stress reduction.
  • Strong communication skills (interactions) with health insurance companies, local vendors for therapeutic services, community health organizations or schools.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations. Strict adherence to confidentiality.
  • Ability to drive between Project sites.
  • Willingness to participate in Equity Express Bus trips.
  • Working knowledge of developmental disability, autism, and learning problems or experience working with individuals with developmental disability, autism, and learning problems or their family.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Bachelor of Arts degree in an applicable social science related field, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
• General understanding of scientific theory and methods, typically gained through completion of an undergraduate degree in a related field.
• General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs.
• Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
• Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
• Effective oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work with human study participants

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
• Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
• Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
• Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, and operates foot and/or hand controls.
