This position will primarily fulfill the role of the 4-H Program Assistant, but will also be assigned some duties as a Support Specialist as needed.The primary role of the Program Assistant is to provide assistance to 4-H clubs and volunteers, conduct 4-H curriculum programs at schools, and develop summer youth educational programs. The 4-H Program Assistant cooperates with colleagues on the county 4-H and Cooperative Extension staff and county citizens in performing his or her assigned responsibilities. This position is responsible for expanding 4-H programs and developing programs to include under-represented populations.Support Specialist’s primary responsibility is to provide support to the Extension staff where assigned. The Support Specialist cooperates with colleagues in the NCCE and county leaders in performing assigned responsibilities. The performance of assigned responsibilities is governed by the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the NCCE.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension partners with communities to deliver education and technology that enrich the lives, land and economy of North Carolinians.Lenoir County, NC is centrally located in eastern North Carolina approximately 75 miles east of Raleigh the state capital and 75 miles west of Morehead City, a seaport and home to the beautiful crystal coast. The county is a blend of agriculture and manufacturing. Other Work/Responsibilities:

The 4-H Program Assistant/Support Specialist is a member of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension staff in Lenoir County. The primary role of the Program Assistant is to provide assistance to 4-H clubs and volunteers, conduct 4-H curriculum programs in schools, develop summer youth educational programs, and conduct phone and lobby reception as needed. Major duties include: Establishing new 4-H clubs and recruiting 4-H volunteers, particularly in under-represented groups within Lenoir County. Assessing county needs with the 4-H Agent and other staff. Preparing specific program plans (writes objectives and conducts evaluations). Developing summer youth educational programs. Partnering with schools to deliver 4-H curriculum programs. Networking with other agencies to implement program. Recruiting and training volunteers and other personnel for program implementation. Reporting activities and program effectiveness to the 4-H Agent. Maintaining and increasing personal professional competence. Marketing program successes and generate support for program expansion. Phone and lobby reception when needed. Preparing and distributing forms, educational literature, and various program related materials. Posting newsletters and educational materials to html.
The 4-H Program Assistant is expected to give program input in the following manner in order to maintain effective working relationships with county 4-H staff members by:
1. Communicating identified needs, interests and problems to 4-H staff members.
2. Evaluating the traditional 4-H programs and determining program objectives.
3. Preparing materials for teaching youth.
4. Designing, implementing and evaluating programs.
5. Studying immediate and long-range goals of 4-H.

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5pm with evenings and weekends as needed.

Minimum Experience/Education:

The minimum requirement for employment with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension (NCCE) is a high-school diploma or equivalent. Advanced training in related fields is preferred.

Department Required Skills:

The minimum requirement for employment is a high school diploma. Ability to work with a variety of individuals, at-risk youth, and adult volunteers. Commitment to the mission of Cooperative Extension and 4-H. Personal qualities of being organized, creative, hard-working, patient, confident, high energy level and a willingness to learn. Interpersonal and group presentation skills. Computer skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Publisher, Internet proficient). Ability to follow written and verbal directions, communicate adequately in both written and verbal form, develop cooperative working relations with co-workers. Good time-management skills and the ability to juggle multiple responsibilities. The ability to work on issues and maintain confidentiality is essential. Must be a good team member and support and develop a positive work environment.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education:

Experience in youth development work. Knowledge of principles and practices of leading school age children. Post-secondary education is preferred. Successful experience, as judged by demonstrated ability to plan, organize, implement and evaluate workshops, working with people as a volunteer and/or paid worker in a youth-oriented educational agency or organization, is highly desirable. Knowledge with the 4-H Youth Development Program is preferred.

Required License or Certification:

Valid Driver’s License and reliable, personal transportation required and must be maintained. In order to operate a state vehicle a valid North Carolina Driver’s License is required and must be maintained.
