Job Description


Executive Director, Immuno-Oncology, Research Oncology

Role Description:
Reporting to the head of Research Oncology, the Executive Director, Immuno-Oncology (I/O) will provide strategic leadership and management of Gilead's immunotherapy drug discovery programs. The successful candidate will work in close partnership with the head of Research Oncology to provide scientific and organizational leadership for I/O programs at varied stages of drug development from early-stage discovery to clinical testing. This leader will develop and maintain collaborative relationships with other leaders and stakeholders within the Oncology Research department and the broader Gilead Research and Development organization, including members of Medicinal Chemistry, Protein Therapeutics, Structural Biology, DMPK, Oncology Biomarkers, and Oncology Clinical development.

As head of Gilead's I/O therapeutic discovery efforts, this leader will lead and grow a talented group of scientists, providing strategic and technical leadership for multidisciplinary, cross-functional drug discovery project teams. The successful candidate will also represent Gilead Research externally and serve as a key driver and decision maker in business and corporate development opportunities related to I/O therapeutics and platforms.

The ideal candidate is a creative and innovative immunologist with strategic, scientific, and technical leadership experience across mid-to-large-sized teams and substantial experience in the successful discovery and development of large and small molecule therapeutics targeting a broad range of immunoregulatory pathways spanning T, NK, myeloid, stromal, and tumor cell biology. The leader will be responsible for managing timelines, milestones, and objectives for therapeutic discovery programs and helping to develop and maintain top talent within the Gilead Oncology Research department.

Capabilities:
  • Ability to function and lead in a highly collegial and collaborative environment.
  • Successful leadership and management of multi-disciplinary scientific teams from target discovery to candidate nomination to IND.
  • Responsibility for multiple projects, developing and orchestrating timelines to achieve Gilead's goals and milestones.
  • Ability to devise and execute an innovative strategy for targeting immunoregulatory pathways to potentiate anti-tumor immunity.
  • Deep scientific knowledge and curiosity, with a passion for target discovery and advancing a world-class Research Oncology therapeutic portfolio. The generation of novel intellectual property and publication in top-tier journals is expected.
  • Critically evaluate external technologies and innovations to support in-licensing and partnering efforts.
  • Represent Gilead externally at scientific meetings, advisory boards, and through high impact presentations, publications, and other scientific communications.

Qualifications:
  • Recognized leader in the field of large and small molecule oncology drug discovery, with a record of scientific accomplishment and publication.
  • Doctorate and/or medical degree in immunology, oncology, cell biology, or related disciplines with relevant post-doctoral experience. Expertise in the fields of immunology and immuno-oncology.
  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience in a biopharmaceutical setting with extensive experience leading drug discovery teams, including setting clear direction and priorities, enabling cross-functional collaboration, empowering people, and developing and mentoring talent.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with an enthusiasm for leading in an environment characterized by rigorous scientific and innovative thinking.

The salary range for this position is: $295,290.00 - $382,140.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
