Ethics Counsel

The State Bar of Michigan (Lansing, MI) has an immediate opening for an Ethics Counsel, responsible for helping to guide and educate attorneys, judges, and law students regarding their ethical obligations under the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct and the Michigan Code of Judicial Conduct. This position may work on projects both within SBM and with outside entities to provide insight and support on ethical issues impacting the profession.

Principal Responsibilities:

• Provide information, education, support, and guidance regarding ethical inquiries from attorneys and judges throughout Michigan, primarily through answering SBM’s ethics helpline.
• Provide support in developing policies on ethical issues, including the implications of innovation and technology on the practice of law.
• Assist committees and subcommittees in research for and drafting of ethics opinions and resources.
• Design, update, and improve SBM ethics resources available to attorneys and judges.
• Develop and present ethics seminars, programs, and trainings for SBM, and for sections, entities, and law schools when requested.
• Draft ethics articles for the Michigan Bar Journal and other publications.
• Provide and expand educational outreach to attorneys, judges, and law students on attorneys’ ethical responsibilities.
• Serve as staff liaison to various committees and subcommittees.
• Collaborate with SBM staff on issues across departments.
• Collaborate with the Attorney Grievance Commission, Attorney Discipline Board, and Board of Law Examiners as needed to develop shared policy goals and guidance.
• Provide legal support to the Client Protection Fund.
• Be an active participant in national organizations on attorney ethics and keep up to date on trending ethics issues.

Minimum Position Guidelines (Education, Experience, Knowledge Skills, and Abilities):

• Licensed attorney in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan required.
• 3-5 years of legal experience preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, as well as time management skills required.
• Ability to quickly become proficient in providing guidance and education regarding the Michigan Rules of Professional Conduct and Michigan Code of Judicial Conduct required.
• Ability to effectively work independently and in a team.

Pay: $75,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
