Catholic Charities Bureau, Inc, Jacksonville Regional Office is seeking several part-time, non-exempt ESOL Teacher This is a part-time position located in Jacksonville, FL. The following teaching schedules are currently available:
Downton Classes at 6 Bay Street
  • Monday and Wednesday from 9:00 am to Noon

Job Summary
The ESOL Instructor is responsible for teaching ESOL courses to beginner and intermediate level students. This position prepares comprehensive ESOL plans, teaches ESOL to adults based on State of Florida, Department of Education standards, keeps a record of student attendance, and attends further trainings offered by Catholic Charities. The instructor may also serve as a liaison between the student, other classroom teachers and their respective refugee resettlement office. The teacher will implement all ESOL procedures to be in compliance with government and organizational policies. The role of the ESOL Instructor is to provide the student with the necessary skills to become proficient in English through grammar, reading, and writing, speaking and listening. The ESOL Instructor will also aid client understanding of U.S. cultural norms, values and practices.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Administer language assessments to students.
  • Prepare lesson plans, course materials and classrooms for instructional activities.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, and demonstrations.
  • Establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects and communicate those objectives to students.
  • Plan and conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate.
  • Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible.
  • Observe and evaluate students' work to determine progress and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs, abilities, and interests.
  • Maintain accurate and complete student records of growth and progress for students, as required by laws or administrative policies.
  • Implement all the procedures of the ESOL Program as prescribed in CASAS intakes, assessments, teaching materials and organizational policies.
  • Provide rigorous and appropriate instruction to ESOL students that supports the acceleration of English and job readiness.
  • Prepare students for further education by encouraging them to explore learning opportunities and to persevere with challenging tasks.
  • Monitor ESOL students’ progress in all aspects of their academic schedule and their participation in their school programs and promote and advocate for their participation as appropriate.
  • Handle student issues within program and organizational policies (e.g., student requests for class changes, absenteeism, potential conflicts etc.).
  • Contact pre-approved instructors for substitution purposes and prepare the appropriate lesson plans and activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Participate in in-service activities, training, continuing education, conferences and workshops for professional development and compliance with grant and Agency policies.
  • Keep detailed records per Agency and department guidance.
  • Correctly enter required information in the prescribed databases, in a timely manner.
  • Comply with regulatory, statutory, contractual, grant and Agency standards for timeliness, completeness and accuracy when preparing and maintaining paperwork and required reports.
  • Comply with Diocesan and Catholic Charities Bureau, Inc. general policies, regulations, and procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to provide instruction according to the instructional program, state and federal standards, and student needs.
  • Ability to develop and implement lesson plans with a broad range of techniques and teaching methods.
  • Knowledge of developmental stages of ELLs (English Language Learners).
  • The ability to incorporate current technology into the classroom environment.
  • The ability to facilitate group discussion, analyze situations, and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to report to work on time, follow directions from supervisor and accept constructive feedback.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to interact effectively, compassionately, and respectfully with clients, visitors, staff and board members.
  • Strong typing and computer skills are required, including knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and other software programs.
  • Excellent organizational skills and able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to remain calm and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • High level of personal initiative and ability to work with minimal oversight.

Required/Preferred Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in Education, from an accredited university.
  • TESOL certification (or willingness to become certified).
  • Knowledge of second language acquisition, techniques for teaching English, ability to conduct appropriate assessments for program placement and monitoring student achievement.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in all the skills of understanding, speaking, reading and writing in English.

  • Clear a Motor Vehicles Records check.
  • Provide proof of and maintain a minimum personal auto insurance according to agency standards.
  • Provide a copy of all certifications prior to your first day of employment.
  • Clear an E-Verify check.
  • Valid Florida state driver’s license.
