Position Title: ESE Teacher Consultant - Career Technical Education
Location: DPSCD Career Technical Centers
Salary: DFT Salary Schedule
Reports to: Exceptional Student Education Lead Administrator or Designee
Bargaining Unit: Detroit Federation of Teachers

Telecommuting Eligibility: School-based. Not eligible for telecommuting.
In accordance with the Detroit Federation of Teachers (DFT) and the Board of Education of the School District of the City of Detroit, the following vacancy is announced.
Position Summary:
The Teacher Consultant for Career Technical Education supports teaching staff by providing instructional services and classroom management techniques at various Career Technical centers throughout the Detroit Public Schools Community District. The teacher consultant will provide stakeholders with a wide array of resources, guidance, and professional development as it relates to the needs of students with exceptionalities attending Career Technical centers, while conducting ongoing monitoring of student progress throughout the school year.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a master's degree in Education or field related to special education
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a minimum of one special education endorsement
  • MDE approval as a teacher consultant, or possess the credentials required to receive state approval
  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful certified teaching experience; three (3) of which must be in a high school special education setting, or five (5) years successful employment in a related service support position
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Proficient with basic computer skills and web-based systems
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality as outlined in FERPA and HIPPA

Essential Functions:
  • Models and supports the mission, vision, core values and priorities of DPSCD.
  • Collaborates and coordinates with Career Technical Education program staff and ESE staff in building positive learning environments that address environmental and instructional needs for students with exceptionalities.
  • Initiates and maintains consistent contact with each student's Career Technical Education program teacher and special education staff to ensure ongoing implantation of the student's IEP and the provision of FAPE.
  • Serves as a liaison between the Career Technical center and each student's attending high school.
  • Ensures Career Technical courses and programs of study align to the career pathway and individual goals of students with exceptionalities.
  • Builds and maintains positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with all stakeholders including, but not limited to instructional staff, students, parents and families, district representatives and other agencies within the community.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of student specific plans and processes including but not limited to Individualized Education Plans, Transition Plans, Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plans, and Manifestation Determination Reviews.
  • Supports instructional responsibilities of staff through the provision of professional development offerings, consultations, and coaching/modeling of the development, implementation, and evaluation of instructional strategies and materials.
  • Analyzes student performance data within and across student populations, making recommendations for action steps at the teacher and departmental levels.
  • Actively participates in professional learning communities, sharing available and relevant resources with colleagues and staff.
  • Supports evaluation teams with initial and reevaluation processes.
  • Participates in District, departmental, school level and parent meetings as required and deemed necessary.
  • Assists teachers with curricular needs, the selection of student assessment and progress monitoring tools, and the collection of relevant student data.
  • Supports student placement and progress in the least restrictive environment, attends student meetings as deemed necessary, including but not limited to IEP team meetings, Transition meetings, Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan meetings, Manifestation Determination Review meetings.
  • Consults with classroom teachers, technology specialists, administrators, other school/central office staff, and families to assist students based on individual needs.
  • Conducts formal and informal student achievement assessments, interpreting and reporting on assessment results as part of the evaluation process, to determine special education eligibility and/or the provision of appropriate programs and services.
  • Locates and shares resources relevant to individual, group and family needs to support the provision of FAPE in the least restrictive environment.
  • Remains available, upon request, to building and central office administrators regarding support for instructional personnel.
  • Makes student referrals to other professional district staff, as appropriate.
  • Supports initiatives to increase parental engagement.
  • Completes and maintains all annual, periodic, and specifically requested reports, schedules, and summaries in a timely manner.
  • Transports materials and equipment to and from site locations.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by supervisor or designee.

  • Security Clearance:
    Internal Applicants
    If you are a current Detroit Public Schools Community District employee, you do not have to submit to a new security clearance, unless your new role requires a different type of criminal background check.
