The City of Asheville invites qualified applicants to the position of Equipment Operator II, Roadside Mower. This position is within the Streets & Sidewalks Division of the Public Works Department. The Equipment Operator II, Roadside Mower performs skilled work in the operation of a variety of heavy motorized equipment on the Mowing Crew. The City's mowing crew is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of approximately 404 miles of streets and 195 miles of sidewalk within the city. This position is part of a crew that keeps pedestrians safe and our City beautiful.
Hiring Rate: $18.59
Schedule: 40 hours per week, Monday - Thursday 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM
This is a full time, benefits eligible position eligible for overtime in accordance with City Policy.

Operates a variety of heavy motorized equipment involved in maintenance of City trees and rights of way.
Operates a farm sized tractor to mow road edges and then in the off season, you will assist the Tree Crews as outlined below.
Facilitates tree maintenance and removal as a ground operations specialist using chainsaws, chippers, stump grinders, skid steer loaders and/or knuckle boom loaders.
The operator also drives snow plow / salt spreader trucks during winter storms.
Transports equipment from location to location.
Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment, such as checking and filling fluid levels and greasing as necessary.
Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs; assists in repair work.
Trains less-experienced Motor Equipment Operators in operation of various types of equipment as workload and time permit.
Performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled labor in conjunction with maintenance and construction projects.
Performs related work as required.
Education & Experience
High school diploma or equivalency, with some relevant experience with operating motorized equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Licensing and Certifications:
Valid Class A or B North Carolina Commercial Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that generally involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, water hazards, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, or rude/irate customers.
