The Maryland National Capital Park & Planning Commission is one of the largest organizations servicing both Montgomery and Prince George's counties. In both counties, we manage the park systems, but in Prince George's County, we also develop the public's recreation programs.
Our Department of Parks & Recreation, the Facility Services Division (FSD) is the largest division in Parks & Recreation. We provide high-quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all of the parks and recreation facilities within Prince George's County. We have six major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry (Roads & Grounds), Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (Aquatics, Sustainability, Heavy Equipment and Roads and Grounds, and ADA) and the Administrative Section.

This position is in the Heavy Equipment/Roads and Grounds unit of the Critical Projects Section which provides landscape horticulture throughout the park system. This position resides under Heavy Equipment (HE) which is responsible for various types of grading and excavation projects including demolition, stormwater system repairs/installation, building parking lots and trails, and renovating athletic fields. In coordination with other shops, maintenance yards, Commission contractors, and government agencies, thisunit will coordinate or implement projects in snow removal, material transport, and more.As an Equipment Operator II, your major responsibilities will be to run the backhoes, track loaders, Bob Cats, motor graders, gradall, excavators, dozers, and other pieces of construction equipment to grade, excavate, and renovate athletic fields, demolitions, stormwater system repairs/installations, parking lots and trails. To accomplish these tasks, you may need to grade or level a road or trail, as well as be able to lay a site out using transit, string lines, or basic measuring devices to determine elevations as needed. As an on-site team lead, you will need to track daily work orders including man hours, equipment usage and the coming/going of daily loads. As one of the essential team members for the Prince George's County Snow Removal Team, your role will be to ensure that the roads within the County are continually salted and plowed as needed, as well as conduct daily walk-around inspections of your equipment to troubleshoot as needed. You will of course keep a daily log per DOT standards. Must observe all safety protocols.
This position requires that you transport material (such as stone, dirt, concrete, and asphalt) and equipment (such as trucks, bulldozers, large excavators, and off-road trucks) using dump trucks or tractor-trailers. Some leadership experience would be preferred, and you should be a team player who gets along with other employees. The ability to read a map is also essential.
- High school diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
- Three years of equipment operation, including a minimum of one year of experience using heavy equipment.
- Must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements at time of employment. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
- Successfully pass Commission medical examination.
