If you do not have eligibility (haven't taken the exam, can't transfer, etc.) for appointment as a Associate Railroad Equipment Inspector, PUC (ARREI) , t he California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) encourages you to apply for a Temporary Authorization (TAU) appointment. A TAU is a non-testing appointment that lasts a maximum of nine (9) months. In order to remain in the position longer than nine (9) months, you must take, pass and be in a reachable rank for the ARREI , examination before the TAU expiration date. To be appointed as a TAU appointment, you must meet the minimum qualifications for the classification. We are anticipating administering the examination in the near future.

Under direction of a Senior Transportation Operations Supervisor, the incumbent executes the Commission's safety oversight responsibilities of railroads overall maintenance of rolling equipment including locomotives. The incumbent performs at a journeyman level. The incumbent must pass a certification process under the auspices of the Federal Railroad Administration. The incumbent must be experienced in and have knowledge of conducting detailed inspections on motive power and equipment, per Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) rules and regulations. Working with and under Blue Flag Protection when workers are present. Possess the ability to identify through observation the condition of safety appliances for proper function, such as platforms, ladders and or uncoupling devices. Incumbent must have the knowledge and experience in methods of inspection, repair, knowledge testing of rail cars and locomotives, to determine if equipment is safe to be offered for service.
Task may include field surveys and investigations, routine or focused inspections of railroad common carriers, research and analysis to evaluate railroad safety policies and exiting regulations governing railroad equipment, operations and other work as required.
The position requires travel the North Region of the state of California inspecting trains, and rail equipment in rail yards and other locations where rail cars are stored. The position requires to occasionally work evenings and weekends, and make occasional overnight stays. The position spends 75% of time working in the field. During field work, the incumbent is required to wear personal protective equipment, including safety vest, hard hat, and appropriate footwear. This position also requires use of written and oral communication skills.
Possession of a valid California Driver's License, Class C is required.The successful applicant will be expected to travel overnight, occasionally for several days at a time, and/or drive over 100 miles on short notices during unusual hours. He/She has a home office in his/her territory. However, he/she will be available for other statewide assignments an/or task, as deemed necessary. The position requires 20/20 vision or better or corrected vision in order to visually inspect and observe characteristics of railroad signal and train control systems and components, hearing capacity to determine if audible warning devices are activated and to hear approaching trains and equipment, be able to walk on uneven surfaces of rail transit agency right-of-way; ability to kneel down; able to utilize computers, measuring equipment, and the ability to handle, file, and store documents.

The mission of the Rail Safety Division (RSD) is to diligently strive to inspire safe and reliable rail transportation in California by promoting and enforcing railroad, rail crossing and rail transit safety; and by improving or establishing a positive rail safety culture therein, through our inspection and enforcement efforts and our resolve to look beyond the regulations. RSD strives to enforce state and federal laws, regulations, orders, and directives relating proactively and effectively to transportation of persons or commodities by rail. RSD is comprised of the Railroad Operations Safety Branch (ROSB), Rail Crossings and Engineering Branch (RCEB), and Rail Transit Safety Branch (RTSB).
