Equipment and Vehicle Repair Technician MT9935  var a2a_config = a2a_config || {}; a2a_config.onclick = 1; Staff (Full-Time) --> FacilitiesDeLand, FL • ID: 1233-280 • Full-Time/Regular

Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Building Maintenance, this position is responsible for diagnosis, maintenance and repair of vehicles, vehicle subsystems, golf carts, lawn and tractor equipment, small hand tools, and custodial equipment. Also assists in providing metalwork, pipefitting and welding services.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs preventive maintenance tasks such as changing fluids and filters, inspecting, cleaning, servicing, and lubricating. This requires the ability to lift or carry up to 100 pounds and to work indoors or outdoors in extreme temperatures.
  • Makes repairs to vehicles, golf carts, lawn and tractor equipment, small hand tools, lifts, and custodial equipment, including mowing and other landscape equipment, consistent with contemporary standards of good practice.
  • Responds to vehicle or small equipment complaints, diagnoses deficiencies and corrects, including removing, repairing, replacing and installing components, or refers problems to the Manager for assistance, and keeps supervisors informed. Repairs vehicle engine, transmission, brake, fuel, coolant, exhaust, battery, alternator, ignition and electrical systems, body and interior finishes, tires, and any other subsystem and associated components and devices.
  • Modifies/upgrades purchased vehicles and equipment, consistent with the department’s needs and requirements.
  • Provides metalwork, pipefitting, and welding services as necessary to repair golf cart framing, tractor and lawn equipment, including fabrication of vehicle/golf cart racks, shelving and carry boxes. Also assists with the metalwork, pipefitting and welding of mechanical room piping and HVAC equipment requirements (e.g., casings, equipment steel supports, pipe braces). Maintain welding Equipment and supplies in good working order.
  • Plans, schedules, and directs the activities of outside Vehicle Repair vendors to ensure the timely return to service of vehicles or equipment.
  • Advises Manager/Supervisor on replacement needs of vehicles and small Equipment and assists in the development of recommendations for their purchase.
  • Updates fleet management software to reflect all current maintenance and repair for vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintains the auto workshop and all equipment inside, keeping it clean, organized, and compliant with all safety and OSHA regulations.
  • Able to multitask, and change direction as required while maintaining a professional demeanor.
  • Able to prioritize repairs for the greatest operational need.
  • Generates estimates as required or obtains estimates from outside repair vendors.
  • Responds to departmental needs with a sense of urgency.
  • Abides by and complies with university policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties or special assignments as assigned.

Required Skills
    Effective oral and writing skills.Practical application of recognized standards of good practice relevant to the servicing and repair of vehicles, vehicle subsystems, lawn care equipment, lifts, and golf carts, including knowledge of material needs.Ability to read and interpret automotive/equipment drawings and wiring diagrams.Ability to work with moving mechanical parts, hydraulic equipment, open flames, heated surfaces, liquids, and risk of electrical shock in damp, humid, or cold conditions.Ability to safely operate welding Equipment and use a welder to join various metal components.Ability to work on ladders, roofs, and other high places.Effective human relations skills with a proactive customer-oriented focus.Available at all hours for emergency service, as well as ability to work overtime, and participate in on-call rotation.Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and codes i.e. Local, State, Federal, and OSHA.Practical application of recognized standards of good practice relevant to matters of safety and security.Knowledgeable in basic practices employed in the automotive/equipment repair trades.Frequent use of hand and power tools, electrical testing devices, shop equipment, solvents, and chemicals, and fine adjustments as needed.

Required Experience

Education: Minimum high school diploma or GED. ASE Certificate or continuing education/vocational training courses in automotive mechanics preferred. Experience in the use of all required tools and equipment with differing degrees of complexity.

Experience: Five (5) years of hands-on experience in the automotive mechanic trade, including in the diagnosis, maintenance and repair of vehicles, vehicle subsystems, golf carts, lifts, and various turf/lawn equipment.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record as determined by the University’s auto insurance carrier.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications: Experience in maintaining a large vehicle fleet.
