Join the California Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) Office of Environmental Equity (OEE) team to make a daily difference in protecting people and the environment. As a Senior Environmental Planner you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead the work of multi-disciplinary staff to integrate the principles and guidelines of Tribal sovereignty throughout DTSC and analyze the public and environmental health threats to Tribal nations
  • Work closely with the site project teams to determine and facilitate project-specific Native American coordination, consultation, and community vulnerability to public and environmental health burdens in compliance with state and federal statutes and executive orders
  • Submit Sacred Lands File and Tribal Contact List requests to the Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC)
  • Attend, participate, and represent the Department at meetings with the Federal, State, and local agencies, consultants, Tribal communities, and with other environmental and community advocacy groups and individuals on issues related to Environmental Justice and Tribal affairs
  • Work in communities and perform outreach efforts, such as, but not limited to, public meetings, questionnaires, phone calls and surveys
Desirable Qualifications We Look For:
  • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local environmental laws and regulations, including the National Environmental Policy Act and the California Environmental Quality Act
  • Experience working with applicable federal, State and local environmental regulatory agencies on project permitting
  • Experience conducting or assisting with government-to-government relationships with California Tribal governments, knowledge of California history and prehistory, skills in archaeological survey techniques
  • Project management experience
  • Cleanup and Regulatory Permitting Experience
  • Public Setting Presentation Skills
  • Interagency collaboration Skills
  • Experience preparing professional reports
  • Experience in training development on Environmental Justice and Tribal focused topics
  • Interest or Experience in working with or in Environmental Justice communities with a focus on community development and engagement
  • Interest or Experience in governmental-to-governmental tribal consultations, and in-field inspections
