The Job

The Department of Public Health's Environmental Health Services Division is recruiting for Environmental Health Specialists III (EHS III) to lead and coordinate an Environmental Health program and serve as an expert consultant performing direct services in a specialized area of Environmental Health. The list established from this recruitment may be used to fill vacancies within the Land Use Protection Program and Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. The EHS III assigned to the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program will perform in-home inspections for lead and lead hazards, collaborate with and conduct training for municipal code enforcement and building inspectors on lead-safe housing, and ensure progressive enforcement of procedures for escalated enforcement actions. The EHS III assigned to Land Use Protection Program serves as a technical expert and staff consultant in the Local Enforcement Agency (LEA) to help ensure the correct operation and closure of solid waste facilities within the county by ensuring proper storage and transportation of solid wastes. EHS III assists the Supervising EHS by assigning and reviewing the work of staff, training and coordinating complex projects.

As an alternative to the traditional benefits package, you may also be eligible to elect the Modified Benefit Option (MBO) that provides an increased base rate of pay ($1.75 per hour above the base rate of pay) with modified benefits. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Work Schedule: May be required to perform duties on-call after normal working hours and on weekends.
Physical: May be required to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl or hike when necessary during the investigation process.
Travel/License: Travel throughout the County is required to perform duties in the field. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation (mileage reimbursement is available). At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation.
Assignment: Must be willing to accept work assignments in the following areas: Rancho Cucamonga, Hesperia, and San Bernardino. Must indicate a willingness to work in all three (3) geographic areas on the Application in order to be eligible for these positions.
Minimum Requirements
Certificate: Must possess and maintain a valid certificate of registration as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) issued by the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Some assignments require specialized certificates. Be sure to indicate any special certifications on the Supplemental Questionnaire.
AND
Experience: One and one-half (1-1/2) years of experience as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist performing Environmental Health inspections and investigations in California.
Note: Experience as a trainee is not qualifying and should be clearly separated from journey-level experience on the Application and Supplemental Questionnaire.
Desired Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess experience leading team projects and knowledge of two or more Environmental Health Services programs (Food Protection, Recreational Health, Insect and Vector Rodent Control, Housing and Property Improvement, Land Use, Water, Waste Water, and Waste Management) in a public agency.
