ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY SPECIALIST
Position Summary:
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist is responsible for planning, establishing, implementing, and maintaining a variety of health, safety, and environmental programs to assure the highest possible degree of safety for employees. Must be able to write and maintain safety data sheets (SDS) for DPG products. Responsible for overall administration of workers compensation program. This role is responsible for responding to after-hour calls and will perform a wide variety of emergency maintenance/repair tasks.
Essential Duties:
  • Effectively ensure that federal, state, and local (safety and environmental) laws, regulations, rules and codes are observed.
  • Effectively manage CAL-OSHA & OSHA recordkeeping and reporting requirements, ensuring DPG stays current with changes in CAL-OSHA &OSHA and other safety related laws, regulations and rulings.
  • Actively develop, coordinate, and deliver effective safety training procedures as required by regulations and in accordance with best practices.
  • Develop controls for identified hazards, coordinate the implementation of controls from result of hazard analyses. Measure and evaluate the effectiveness of the hazard control system, policies and procedures and recommend changes that reflect improved opportunities to eliminate workplace accidents and injuries
  • Plan, develop and implement safety training for new employee orientation and annual required programs.
  • Effectively and actively identify and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices in the workplace, conduct and coordinate on-site inspections to audit physical conditions and safe work practices. Provide advice and counseling for all compliance regulations.
  • Compile, analyze, interpret, and report accidents. Review property and injury reports. Responsible for overall administration of workers compensation program
  • Effectively develop, implement, and maintain a safety policy handbook and site-specific policies that are required by law.
  • Effectively monitor, revise, and implement ongoing updates in safety regulations, laws or reporting requirements to ensure compliance. To include writing, reviewing and maintenance of Safety Data Sheets(SDS) for DPG products and SDS binders
  • Monitor and ensure employees are consistently following safety protocol.
  • Effectively maintain required safety supplies, products and training items. Oversight of PPE Program, ensuring Deerpoint Group provides the proper PPE too employees.
  • IIPP Administrator responsibility, implementing provisions of the program. Maintain and update IIPP annually
  • Develop and maintain current expertise in DPG chemicals, products and Safety best practices regarding the hazards associated with the chemicals.
  • Responsible for ensuring heat illness protocol is followed, documentation, recording heat illness related incidents, updating Heat Illness Prevention Plan annually.
  • Effectively performs special assignments and projects as requested by leadership.
  • Train supervisors, managers and other leaders in the company on Health and Safety standards.​
Education:
B.S. in Industrial Safety or related degree. (Preferred)
OSHA Certifications: Preferred - 501 / 511 / HAZWOPER / IH (Industrial Hygienist) / CSP / ASP (Preferred)
Experience:
4 years related experience in industrial safety, CAL-OSHA, and environmental regulations. Developing, writing, and maintaining safety data sheets, chemical knowledge, and workers compensation administration.
Skills: Must have a strong ability to analyze and solve problems; Must be proficient in the use of computers, and Microsoft Office. Must possess a high level of technical expertise, ability to apply skills to continuous process improvement while maintaining maximum levels of safety. Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Proficiency in computer processing functions and other standard office equipment; ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks; Ability to read, comprehend reports and regulatory documents and explain clearly and concisely to others; Ability to work independently with minimal supervision; Strong organizational skills.
Physical Requirements: Ability to walk, stoop, bend, kneel, and lift and move 10 pounds on a regular basis, up to 50 pounds occasionally; ability to sit and drive for hours at a time.
Working Conditions:
This position functions both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to a variety of work environments; which include outside weather conditions and exposure to machinery and equipment with moving parts. Employee may be subject to moderate noise levels. Employee must be able to wear a full-face respirator and required PPE; ability to work in high heat conditions.
