Position Title: Environmental Health Specialist

Organization: Lewis and Clark County, Public Health

Pay Rate: $29.64 per hour to $32.26 per hour

Position Type/Status: Regular, Full-time, Non-exempt

Lewis and Clark County Public Health is hiring for an Environmental Health Specialist. Under general supervision of the Environmental Program Supervisor, this position performs required activities including inspections and data collection in wastewater treatment and septic maintenance programs, junk vehicle and wrecking yards, air quality monitoring, air quality regulation enforcement, complaint investigation and emergency preparedness.

Duties

  • Performs site evaluations and required inspections of onsite wastewater treatment systems;
  • Enforces laws and regulations related to public health;
  • Inspects motor vehicle wrecking yards;
  • Investigates complaints about litter, junk vehicles, wastewater systems and air quality violations;
  • Attends Local Emergency Planning Committee monthly meetings;
  • Provides community education and outreach on public health issues;
  • Attends staff, State Health Department and national, state and community meetings and conferences as required;
  • Performs other duties to support Environmental Division programs when needed;
  • Represents the department on issues related to sustainability and climate change;
  • Performs duties and responsibilities in a culturally sensitive and appropriate manner;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Schedule and complete inspections according to department standards;
  • Operate computer systems and related software, including word processing and spreadsheet programs;
  • Follow written and oral instruction;
  • Manage projects according to department standards;
  • Complete reports and required documentation according to prescribed standards;
  • Ability to develop connections or work with diverse populations;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with people contacted in the course of work, including co-workers, supervisors, and citizens.

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a four (4) year degree in biology or physical sciences, with at least 45 quarter hours or 30 semester hours in the physical and biological health sciences with specific courses in biology, chemistry, and microbiology. Successful applicants for this position are required to have certification as a Registered Sanitarian with the State of Montana at time of employment or must obtain certification within twelve months of date of hire.

Special Requirements

  • Frequent local travel during business day;
  • May be some out-of-area and overnight travel;
  • Must have a valid Montana driver's license.

Physical Demands

Duties are performed in the field as well as an office environment where hazards and discomforts are controlled and modifiable. Field work will generally be outside under all weather conditions. This position requires the ability to bend at the waist, kneel, reach over the head, talk, hear, and see. Must be able to move or lift equipment, documents, materials weighing up to 20 pounds. Position requires knowledge of working safely around heavy equipment and unstable ground while in the field.
