Summary
Promotes a clean and safe environment through education, inspection and enforcement related to FDA food code, Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER), local, state and federal rules and ordinances related to all programs monitored or licensed by Environmental Health Department.
Essential Functions
  • Inspect retail food establishments, food manufactures, food warehousing facilities, recreational water facilities, body art facilities, and establishments that allow smoking, for compliance with local, state and federal regulations and ordinances governing sanitary conditions and compliance of their operations;
  • Works rotating on-call, inspecting temporary events or responding to calls from Fire department or other City departments during nights, weekends, holidays and after hours;
  • Respond and investigate complaints against regulated facilities;
  • Respond and investigate general Environmental Health nuisance complaints;
  • Develop and maintain positive public relations and resolve complaints in a diplomatic manner;
  • Perform plan reviews of new, remodeled or converted facilities in a timely manner;
  • Coordinate activities with clerical staff, other inspection staff and other city departments;
  • Coordinate with federal, state or other organizations concerning disease investigations, hazardous waste response and training/education;
  • Develop presentations and training events for facilities and public on Environmental Health concerns;
  • Monitor assigned area for conditions which could adversely affect public health or environment;
  • Perform and document inspections, investigations and enforcement actions using a tablet computer;
  • Prepare and present reports;
  • Proper use and maintenance of assigned test equipment and scientific instruments;
  • Testify before appropriate boards, commissions or courts;
  • Perform related duties as directed,

Qualifications
The Position requires a bachelor's degree with a minimum of 30 hours of Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation TDLR approved science courses. Degree in microbiology, biology or chemistry preferred;
Valid Current Driver's License

Additional Information
Upon attainment of credentials as a Registered Sanitarian, the incumbent will attain the classification of Environmental Health Sanitarian II.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
  • Local, state, federal regulations and ordinances related to retail food establishments, food manufactures, food warehousing facilities, recreational water facilities, body art facilities, establishments that allow smoking and general Environmental Health nuisances.
Ability to:
  • Make decisions based on current rules and regulations as well as scientific research and trends;
  • Register and complete required on-line course work within 6 months of hire;
  • Obtain license as a Registered Sanitarian within 24 months of hire;
  • Obtain Certified Pool Operators certification within 6 months of hire;
  • Obtain Certified Pool Inspectors certification within 12 months of hire;
  • Obtain Certified Food Managers certification within 6 months of hire;
  • Educate, enforce, read and interpret City of Lubbock ordinances state/federal law;
  • Work with the public in a diplomatic manner using conflict resolution skills, tactful persuasion and professional etiquette;
  • Prepare and complete reports and document evidence of violations;
  • Plan, prepare and deliver educational presentations to the public;
  • Effectively manage time and multiple projects.
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently walk during the shift;
  • Continuously bend during the shift;
  • Occasionally kneel during the shift;
  • Place arms above, at and below shoulder height;
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 25 pounds;
  • Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds;
  • Coordinate eye, hand and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle.
