A prominent firearms company and manufacturer of a wide range of ammo, optics, suppressors and training products is currently seeking a Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) to provide full-time environmental, health, and safety direction and leadership to support all operations of the company in U.S. facilities including small arms manufacturing, small arms tactical training and retail shop, ammunition manufacturing, optics, and sight manufacturing, and ancillary locations.

  • Seeking a Director of EHS to be responsible for compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal environmental, health, safety, and radioactive material regulations applicable to the above operations and for the administration of workers compensation programs and insurance for all U.S. Facilities.

The Compensation

  • $150,000 - $190,000 Annual Base Salary Range Commensurate with Experience Plus 19% Annual Bonus

The Role

  • Spearhead the strategic leadership of the company's EHS initiatives, maintaining and enhancing its proactive industry leader reputation.
  • Ensure continuous improvement in EHS performance while adhering to all regulatory compliance.
  • Chair or collaborate with internal and external teams/committees, such as the Department of Transportation (DoT) Compliance Committee, Offsite Range Safety group, Implementation of software, and Learning Management System (LMS), for the development of evolving EHS-related missions, policies, and programs.
  • Act as the company's representative/liaison to various external entities, including EHS federal, state, and local agencies, customers, suppliers, industry groups, military, law enforcement, and government entities.
  • Develop EHS programs and policies for small arms, ammunition manufacturing, and other company activities in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and various state and local environmental regulations.
  • Provide technical expertise, leadership, and support for regulatory compliance issues in EHS across all company locations and departments.
  • Mentor the EHS team, standardizing protocols, procedures, and recordkeeping to ensure success at different levels.
  • Offer insights on EHS aspects for all new acquisitions, processes, and equipment before purchase or implementation.
  • Conduct periodic audits of EHS programs and policies, developing a tracking system for continued effectiveness.
  • Review data from investigations of incidents, near misses, and property damage to determine root causes, ensuring applicable corrective actions are implemented.
  • Manage the collection and maintenance of internal and regulatory reporting data.
  • Serve as the primary contact for all regulatory agency inspections, audits, permitting, and reporting.
  • Stay informed about applicable EHS regulatory updates and changes.
  • Administer the workers' compensation program, providing status updates on claims, loss experience trends, and program costs to upper management.
  • Maintain required injury and illness records, track industry-specific and competitor injury/illness rates, and oversee the Return to Work Program.
  • Act as the corporate Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), ensuring compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and State Radioactive Materials programs regulations.
  • Review State and NRC radioactive materials licenses, ensuring compliance with license requirements and requesting amendments as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and DoT regulations regarding hazardous waste.
  • Act as the Emergency Coordinator for fire, smoke, spill, and medical incidents.
  • Serve as the EHS point of contact for the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA) for all contracts.
  • Coordinate annual facility-wide industrial hygiene monitoring to eliminate or reduce contaminants of concern.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Manage EHS training programs and training calendar, ensuring proper recordkeeping.
  • Track costs associated with EHS implementation and monitor current pricing for cost-effective solutions.
  • Implement the company's environmental management plan as required.
  • Lead data collection for proper authoring of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) following OSHA requirements and customer country regulations.
  • Champion the company's Performance System (SPS) Safety Lean Key as part of the management team, ensuring participation from all EHS team members.


The Background Profile

  • U.S. Citizenship required
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Safety Engineering or EHS; Masters of Science in relevant field preferred
  • 8-10+ years of relevant and progressive EHS experience
  • Prior experience with Defense Contractors and the Department of Defense (DoD) required; experience with Tier 1 OEMs or the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) a plus
  • Strong local and state regulatory experience required; environmental regulatory experience a plus
  • Substantial background in the Manufacturing, Durable Goods, Metal Cutting, and/or Explosives industry
  • Previous exposure to and/or certifications in explosive safety, radiation safety, and laser safety
  • Expert-level knowledge of Agile Methodology, Oracle and/or ERP systems
  • Proven Project Management experience; relevant certification a plus
  • Ability to pass full pre-employment ATF drug test and background screening
  • Availability for quarterly travel up to 40% to all company locations (New Hampshire, Arkansas, and Ohio) and other designated areas
  • Willing and able to work 100% onsite at the Corporate Office near Portsmouth, NH
  • Familiarity with mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage in designated areas
