The intern option is for students working towards academic credit to achieve a Baccalaureate's degree in Environmental Health Science or related field of science. This is a field entry-level position.
The Environmental Health Intern performs a variety of functions under the direction and supervision of Environmental Health Practitioners. A McLean County Health Department Environmental Health intern will assist Environmental Health Practitioners in completing inspections and re-inspections in the following programmatic areas: Food Safety Non-Community Water Systems Water Well Construction Geothermal Technology Installations Abandoned Well Sealings Onsite Wastewater Treatment Construction Vector Surveillance Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Intern): Interact with the public and co-workers in a professional, courteous, and polite manner. Assists in performing inspections of full-time food establishments and temporary food establishments at festivals and special events.
Assists in performing onsite wastewater treatment installation inspections, including sketching the system, finalizing an "as built" schematic, preparing paperwork for the homeowner and preparing the file for processing. Assists on investigations of complaints such as sewage discharges, nuisances, food establishments, potable water sampling, illegal dumping, property maintenance, and vector harborage sites. Assists in obtaining samples from private, semi-private, and non-community water supplies for laboratory analysis.
Conducts West Nile Virus surveillance activities throughout the county including but not limited to: Responding to dead bird calls, collecting and processing viable birds for shipping and laboratory analysis, setting mosquito traps, collecting captured mosquitoes, processing mosquitoes to be analyzed using Rapid Analyte Measurement Platform (RAMP), alert neighborhoods where WNV has been identified, accompany the Senior Environmental Health Practitioner to media interviews related to WNV and completing in person public contacts to educate business owners on managing and minimizing mosquito harborage areas. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Seasonal Employee): A McLean County Environmental Health Seasonal Employee's duties and responsibilities will be specifically focused on Vector and West Nile Virus Surveillance activities. Both positions have the duty and responsibility of the following: Assists with office work, including Database entry using Excel formulas and working across spreadsheets.
Reviewing files of inactivated onsite wastewater treatment systems develop articles on food safety for annual food safety newsletter. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Must be able to walk upon uneven terrain Tolerate extreme changes in ambient temperatures and weather conditions Lift and carry a minimum weight of 20 pounds for distances as far as mile Properly don and doff eye, hearing, and respiratory protective equipment After hours and weekend work may be required Basic lab procedures Required Qualifications Valid Illinois Driver's License Environmental Health interns must be 21 years of age or older due to the nature of businesses inspected. Suggested Training and Experience (student candidates only) A junior or senior level college or university student working towards academic credit to achieve a Baccalaureate degree in Environmental Health Science or similar science based academic program.
Preferred Qualifications (student candidates only) A senior standing in a baccalaureate degree in Environmental Health Science accredited by the National Environmental Health Association Accreditation Council. Available to continue West Nile Virus surveillance activities beyond the required commitment for academic credit. The West Nile Virus surveillance season ends October 15th of each year or sooner if weather conditions mitigate mosquito activity.
Physical Demands and Work Environment This position requires activities such as sitting, walking and standing for long periods of time, walking on uneven surfaces, bending, crawling, stooping, reaching, climbing stairs, lifting, moving and carrying medium to heavy objects, operating office equipment, and driving an automobile.
