Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for protecting public health in central New Mexico by ensuring all facilities/ sites are properly constructed, installed and/or operated to meet compliance with applicable New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) regulations, which includes issuing or denying liquid waste, food facility, public pool/spa permits, and overseeing that staff respond to consumer complaints in department programs as well as serving as the lead for the Department's Aquatics program.
How does it get done?
- Oversight of the District's seven field offices
- Direct staff efforts to gain voluntary compliance in accordance with applicable (NMED) regulations
- Take enforcement actions when necessary, including notices of violations, filing criminal complaints, and filing in district court
- Provide integrated support services to the general public and regulated community on behalf of the District to ensure that the Departments' goals, objectives, and policies are upheld and accomplished
- Supervise staff managers to ensure proper inspections of facilities by confirming compliance to applicable NMED regulations
- Give overall policy and budgetary direction to bureau staff and management in the assigned field offices
- Offer outreach and oversee District 1 field offices

- Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies to include contractors, and environmental not for profit organizations.

Ideal Candidate
- Conducting inspections of food establishments, liquid waste systems and/or public swimming pools in a regulatory environment
- Communicating effectively and professionally (verbally and in writing)
- Supervising and supporting staff
Minimum Qualification
Master's Degree in Environmental Science, Animal Science, Natural Science, Biological Science, Physical Science and/or chemistry and eight (8) years of work experience in environmental science, animal science, natural sciences, biological science, physical science and/or chemistry. Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is Performed in both an office setting and outdoors, with considerable travel to field locations, to permit, inspect, investigate, or enforce Food, Liquid Waste, and Swimming Pool regulations. This position has extensive daily, public contact. The primary work schedule is Monday -Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Occasional weekend work may be required.
