Environmental Hazard Specialist / Fire Sprinkler Support
(Maintenance Mechanic 3)
Full-Time | Permanent
Monday - Friday | 40hrs/week | Flexible

About the position
This position supports the Fire and Environmental shop as it pertains to the regular testing and repairs of the Fire Sprinkler systems, including backflow preventers, throughout all the campus buildings and structures. It also supports the Fire shop with the annual fire alarm system testing and repairs. The selected incumbent will be responsible for collection of air, material and other samples for testing and mitigation of hazardous materials. You will also act as the environmental contact for outside vendors, including pest control, encampment cleanups and asbestos mitigation and testing. In addition, you will be required to work with multiple vendors, contractors, E&A Services, consultants, and other maintenance staff to be aware of systems status on a daily basis. You will be a stakeholder in helping to define the campus standards regarding the buildings fire suppression systems.
This position is recognized as a Continuity of Operations Plans (COOP) Designation - for Disaster or Emergency Recovery. This position is vital to ensuring the functionality of the life safety fire suppression and other life safety systems and their vital components remain intact and functioning as required. The selected candidate will be required to perform the duties that may differ from normal duties and would be temporary - lasting only as long as necessary to resume normal operations.
About the Division
The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and DES-managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates, and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 27 buildings, 18 public monuments, four state parks, over 6,000 parking stalls, and a 260-acre lake. B&G executes these responsibilities through the following service programs: Facilities Operations, Grounds Operations, Leadership and Administrative, Maintenance and Repairs, Parking Services, and Support Services Custodial.

Assist with the required NFPA 25 Fire Sprinkler testing, maintenance, and repair per requirements
  • Support annual, semiannual and quarterly testing of all wet and dry Fire Sprinkler systems
Air quality and Materials Testing / Evaluation
  • Perform 'Indoor Air Quality' and spore trap sampling
  • Maintain all related equipment calibrations
  • Ensure inventory of testing consumables is adequate for projected usage
  • Good Faith inspections for improvement projects; sample and test building materials for lead and other hazardous content; oversee contractor abatement projects
  • Maintain confined space Verification Testing equipment
  • Perform permitted confined space evaluations and verifications, record and maintain results
Backflow Testing
  • Test, repair, and maintain campus backflow systems
Asbestos Operations and Maintenance
  • Perform asbestos inspections and Good Faith inspections for improvement projects
  • Sample and test building materials for asbestos content
  • Oversee contractor abatement projects
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections apply for required permits and complete reports to L&I and local air pollution control authorities
Encampment Cleanup and Reporting
  • Documentation of the condition and extent of existing encampments
  • Cleanup of smaller encampments
  • Coordination with CSVS and vendors on larger encampments
Pest control and cleanup
  • Coordinating with pest control vendor in response to tenant reports
  • Monitoring pest control measures and feedback to vendor
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
    AND
  • One year of experience as a journey-level worker in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work
  • Must possess a valid driver's license free of serious traffic violations

Preferred/DesiredQualifications:
  • NICET 'Inspection and Testing of Water Based Systems - Level I' (or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date)
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and drawings using MS Word/Excel and AutoCAD or similar programs
  • Ability to work safely at heights from ladders, roofs, or other exposed situations and in confined spaces such as tunnels, utility vaults, and crawlspaces
  • Possess HAZWOPER 40 Certification (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date)
  • Washington State Backflow Assembly Tester License (BAT) (or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date)
  • AHERA Accredited Building Inspector Certification (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date)
  • Washington State Certified Asbestos Worker Certification (or the ability to obtain within 6 months of hire date)
  • OSHA Confined Space (General Industry) Certification (or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire date)
  • Basic computer skills
  • Experience with inspection and testing of Fire Sprinkler systems
  • OSHA Hazard Communication Training
  • Experience in facility maintenance, including operating a variety of hand and power tools
  • First Aid / CPR / AED Certification
  • Forklift operator certification
  • Bloodborne pathogen training
  • Confined space, high angle, or industrial rescue operations training

  • As listed in the above requirements, you must possess a valid driver's license free of serious traffic violations
