Job Summary
The Environmental Data Compliance Specialist is primarily responsible for supporting departmental environmental compliance initiatives including providing support for the Lowe's HAZMAT Item and WERCS 3rd party compliance data classification processes, processing invoices as well as conducting EPA mandated Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plan re-certifications and review of all hazardous waste pickup and emergency response cleanup invoices for accuracy prior to payment and Lowe's HAZMAT Program compliance tracking. The Environmental Compliance Specialist is also responsible for preparing paperwork and payments for environmental and HAZMAT related permits, licenses, and fees for all stores and supply chain locations, and including License HQ database tracking of all payments and sending the permits to the stores as well as payment of all EPA mandated annual bulk chemical Tier II fees. This position is also responsible for entering and tracking regulatory inspections and HAZMAT emergency spill response reports in the License HQ database. To accomplish this, the Environmental Compliance Specialist must have functional knowledge of DOT hazardous materials, EPA hazardous waste and OSHA regulations along with applicable laws and regulations. The Environmental Compliance Specialist will collaborate directly with Store Operations, Supply Chain, Finance, Merchandising, and Loss Prevention personnel in the field and at the corporate office as well as with associated vendor representatives in order to accomplish the above goals and objectives.
Key Responsibilities
• Assists with classifying all Lowe's HAZMAT items (Approximately 20,000 current HAZMAT items) as well as running monthly reports to identify and classify newly on-boarded items. Contacts product vendors directly to notify and instruct them on their responsibility to enter their hazmat item attributes into WERCS (3rd party vendor) data portal.
• Works in conjunction with 3rd party vendor (Infotrac) to confirm Lowe's HAZCODE classifications and then makes changes to current Lowe's HAZCODE classifications in PCM item attribute database for items that are incorrectly classified by product vendors during new item setup.
• Conducts interviews with store personnel to re-verify Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans as required by the EPA mandated recertification process.
• Reviews and submits facility permit invoices and paperwork. Annually processes in excess of 3,000 invoices. Sends permits to the stores.
• Reviews, completes paperwork and submits payments for fees related to the EPA mandated annual Tier II bulk chemical reporting process for all stores, supply chain, and corporate locations.
• Reviews all hazardous waste disposal vendor (Stericycle) invoicing for accuracy for the routine hazmat pick-ups as well as emergency spill response incidents. Approximately 3,800 invoices were processed in 2015.
• Requests Safety Data Sheets (SDS) from product suppliers and sends to Infotrac for publishing in the Lowe's SDS database.
• Enters information related to environmental inspections and emergency response calls into the License HQ database.
• Runs intake and tracking reports from License HQ Database.
• Runs compliance reporting in Cybermanager (on-line LP Portal) pertaining to HAZMAT Program weekly and monthly inspection reporting tasks to monitor and track company compliance to required regulatory standards. Follow up with field teams as needed to address compliance issues.
• Assists Safety Team with preparing responses to OSHA inspections and violations
• Assists the hazardous waste disposal vendor with collecting and filing store and supply chain hazardous waste drum logs.
• Maintains and manages the WERCS Support and fire safety e-mail box and responds to requests from each accordingly.
• Develop and implement training for new Merchandising Specialists on understanding the why and what behind Lowe's Hazardous Materials classification system so they can understand the importance and regulatory requirements Lowe's must follow to ensure company compliance.
Required Qualifications
• Associate's Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Environmental Engineering, Hazardous Materials, Environmental Policy, Regulatory Compliance, or related field
• 2 years' experience in a business environment and working knowledge of environmental regulations
• 2 years' experience with knowledge of EPA, OSHA, NFPA, as well as state-specific environmental standards.
• Skilled in using Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office applications
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree - Environmental Science, Hazardous Materials, or Regulatory Compliance, Environmental Policy, Environmental Engineering, or related field
• 2 years' experience with a mass retailer or multi-location employer, working for or directly with a federal or state environmental agencies. Extensive knowledge of EPA, OSHA, NFPA, as well as state-specific environmental standards. well as state-specific environmental standards and compliance issues.
