Job Summary

Under the direction of the Environmental Control Inspector, conducts preliminary and comprehensive environmental field inspections of commercial enterprises including asbestos abatement, demolition projects and other situations to ensure enforcement and compliance to the Environmental Control Ordinance of Cook County.  Monitors the environment (i.e. air, water, noise, solid waste, and hazardous material) with regards to ordinance violation. Cites pollution violators and provides environmental information to the general public. Prepares detailed environmental inspection reports for administrative review and determination for subsequent course(s) of action.  Assists with the training of new ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL inspection personnel relative to the policies and procedures of the department.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

       Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree is required

       Three (3) years' full-time professional work experience conducting building inspections or asbestos abatement oversight is required.

       Valid driver's license and current proof of insurance is required.

This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. Candidates who are selected to fill safety-sensitive positions must pass a required drug test as part of the pre-employment background check process.

*Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States territories and Canada, must be credentialed by the World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or a National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES) member organization. 

  KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

 

Knowledge of the regulations contained in the Environmental Control Ordinance of Cook County, State of Illinois and U.S. Rules. Ability to understand the operation of air pollution control equipment, industrial processes, fuel burning and combustion equipment.  Ability to comprehend the operation of various portable monitors and measurement devices used in environmental pollution control and assess asbestos containment activities.  Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to learn new software.  Skill in the operation and usage of various portable monitors and measurement devices for environmental pollution control.  Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with Agency personnel and the general public.  Ability to conduct investigations in the field and prepare detailed written reports pertinent to environmental inspections. Completion of an Illinois Department of Public Health certified Asbestos Building Inspector course. This position requires various types of physical exertion, including, but not limited to lifting, pulling, pushing, climbing, and moving objects of moderate to heavy weight, and working in all weather conditions. This position requires moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout Cook County for which the employee must provide his or her own adequate means of transportation.

 

Physical Requirements

 Sedentary Work

Sedentary Work involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
