  • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a field related to the job, plus four (4) years of related experience, two (2) years of which were in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Education or experience may be substituted up to a maximum of four (4) years

The Development Services Department (DSD) assists homeowners, business owners, and contractors when they build, demolish, remodel or perform any type of construction to ensure compliance with applicable city and building codes.
DSD is seeking an Environmental Compliance Supervisor to supervise a multi-faced work group comprised of Environmental and Tree Inspections. This position is expected to have time performing field inspection reviews and analysis to ensure safety, inspection, and performance standards as well as limited office time to complete required administrative functions.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Enforcement.
  • Experience managing cases or citations in court and providing witness testimony.
  • Experience with Land Development Code.
  • Experience with Drainage and Environmental Criteria Manuals.
  • Certified Erosion, Sediment, & Stormwater Inspector (CESSWI), Certified Inspector of Sediment and Erosion Control (CISEC), Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC), and/or International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) Certified Arborist or the ability to obtain one or more of these certifications within 24 months of hire.
  • Knowledge and experience inspecting temporary Best Management Practices (BMP) at construction sites.
  • Proven work experience in a supervisory role with ability to train employees when needed.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
  • Plans and coordinates daily activities and operations of environmental personnel to support departmental objectives.
  • Develops goals, objectives, and resource requirements for activities.
  • Develops, revises, and implements standard operating practice, policy, and procedure. Interprets and explains environmental regulations. Ensures compliance with all city policies and procedures.
  • Prepares, monitors, and ensures section operates within appropriated budget.
  • Coordinates and monitors the safety of environmental personnel in the field.
  • Coordinates the activities of contractors providing waste management and spill response services.
  • Oversees and schedules training of Environmental Compliance personnel.
  • Receives, investigates, and monitors Environmental Compliance customer complaints and ensures their resolution.
  • Writes, drafts, and completes reports and documents. Reviews regulatory reports prepared by subordinates.
Responsibilities – Supervision and/or Leadership Exercised:
  • Responsible for the full range of employee supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling, and recommendation for dismissal.

  • Skill in using computers and related software.
  • Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, maps, and written specifications.
  • Ability to train others.
  • Ability to quickly recognize and analyze irregular events.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with city employees and the public.
