Job description

We are hiring an entry level Environmental Scientist to conduct land management and monitoring activities at multiple ecological restoration sites throughout Wisconsin.  The position will be based in our new Madison, WI office. Travel throughout the state with multiple overnights is required for this position. Job duties include vegetation restoration, stream and wetland survey and monitoring, invasive species management, data collection and report writing. This is a full-time, seasonal position with anticipated 40+ hours/week beginning approximately April 1st and ending October 31st.

The Position

Help us grow and strengthen our natural resources work in Wisconsin and the upper Midwest.  KCI Technologies is actively restoring wetlands and streams throughout Wisconsin and working with conservation partners to manage conservation lands. Your position will play a critical role to successfully establish the first stream mitigation bank approved in the state of Wisconsin and help to build the foundation for a new stream and wetland restoration complex in the Driftless region.  You will play a key role help us manage restored wetlands in the Lake Superior Basin and in Southeast Wisconsin and to grow our restoration work with conservation partners throughout the region.

  • Position duties include vegetation restoration, stream and wetland survey and monitoring, invasive species management, data collection and report writing.
  • This is a full-time, seasonal position with anticipated 40+ hours/week beginning approximately April 1st and ending October 31st. Depending on anticipated demand and workload, position may be extended beyond the 2024 field season

 

Position Requirements

  • BS in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Forestry or equivalent.
  • Current Wisconsin DATCP herbicide applicator license or ability to obtain license.
  • Overnight travel (typically Monday through Thursday) will be required.
  • Must be able to lift weights up to 50lbs, wear personal protective equipment and be familiar with field equipment operation.
  • This is a field-based position, and the successful applicant will be exposed to beautiful landscapes, and various weather and environmental conditions and outdoor hazards.
  • Must have familiarity/ability to operate chainsaws, brush cutters, ATVs, and tractors.
  • This position requires a motor vehicle record check and a valid driver’s license.
  • Applicant will be expected to safely mix and apply herbicides

Preferred experience:

  • Knowledge and exposure to ecological restoration techniques,  natural resource management, invasive species control, data collection and analyses.
  • Knowledge of invasive species treatment techniques and ability to identify Midwest native and invasive species.
  • Strong navigational skills to locate key features within the restoration sites is ideal.
  • Knowledge of invasive species management 
  • FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate is a plus.

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required.  
  • Minimum of 0 -2 years of professional experience.  Appropriate professional certification preferred.
  • Pre-employment drug screening is a condition of employment. Background and motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.

  • Complete Annual Individual Training Program
  • Train adequate backup personnel to support your role in your absence
  • Attend meetings with clients as required
  • Comply with all KCI policies and procedures
  • Ensure projects fulfill ISO compliance requirements
  • Complete other duties as required/assigned
  • Assist with preparation of proposals and qualifications in repsonse to RFPs and RFQs
  • Achieve or exceed budgeted individual utilization target(85% typical)
  • Attend bi-weekly(or more frequently as necessary) meetings with project team on all projects/tasks
  • Complete all tasks on time and within budget while fully meeting the scope
  • Operate within specified (corporate or project) budget parameters
  • Assess and document potential project impacts
  • Collect required field data using proper protocols and techniques
  • Lead field surveys
  • Lead the development of and assemble organized, clear, and cohesive technical reports
  • Prepare avoidance or minimization recommendations
  • Prepare mitigation strategy and plan as required
  • Process field data for inclusion in reports and deliverables
  • Review and interpret lab results
