Job Description
Norfolk Southern Corporation is currently seeking a dedicated Enterprise Application Monitoring Engineer to support and execute our Enterprise Application Monitoring program. This pivotal role involves collaboration with the Senior Program Architect and the Enterprise Monitoring team. The successful candidate will ensure the optimal performance and reliability of our IT systems and applications, playing a significant role in enhancing our system's stability, performance, and resilience.
Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Architect and the Enterprise Monitoring team to execute the comprehensive Application Monitoring program, focusing on design, configuration, and implementation of proactive monitoring solutions and reactive alerting mechanisms.
  • Assist in assessing the current architecture and our observability solutions, pinpointing and addressing gaps to ensure optimal performance and reliability of IT systems and applications.
  • Support the Architect and the Enterprise Monitoring team in defining, developing, and tracking KPIs related to system performance and incident response. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to pinpoint potential system inefficiencies and translate these metrics into actionable insights.
  • Engage with IT, development teams, and business stakeholders to understand their requirements, ensuring the monitoring program aligns with business objectives.
  • Deploy, scale, and continuously improve robust systems and our Observability infrastructure, providing real-time visibility into application performance.
  • Design and automate alerting and remediation processes, working in tandem with the Architect and the Enterprise Monitoring team's strategies to reduce MTTR and enhance system uptime.
  • Develop and contribute to the development of technical documentation and standard operating procedures for the monitoring program.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams of engineers and developers, under the guidance of the Architect, to ensure successful program execution. Establish and promote best practices to ensure our systems emit relevant metrics.
  • Collect, consolidate, and visualize metrics, transforming raw data into actionable insights.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends in Application Monitoring technologies, sharing insights with the Architect for the continuous improvement of the monitoring program.

Skills and Abilities
  • Proven experience in software and systems architecture, with a focus on Application Monitoring and observability.
  • Experience in the observability, operations or DevOps domains.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and experience collaborating with development and operations teams.
  • Proficient in automating alerting and remediation processes.
  • Solid understanding of KPI development and application.
  • Comprehensive understanding of enterprise software applications, databases, and capacity planning.

Required Qualifications
  • 3-5 years experience Application Monitoring and logging tools such as Datadog, Dynatrace, New Relic, SolarWinds, or similar.
  • Configuration experience maintaining monitoring and observability tools, specifically Datadog & Dynatrace.
  • Experience in monitoring server, network infrastructure, and application performance metrics.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or related field. Advanced Degrees and certifications are a plus.
