The City of Fairfield Engineering Division is recruiting for two Engineering Technician II positions!
The Engineering Division ensures compliance with best engineering practices both for private development and City-run construction projects. The City is excited to be recruiting for one Engineering Technician for the Development Section and one for the Capital Design Section. In these roles, the successful candidate will be performing a variety of technical engineering work. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work may include prolonged sitting, as well as light to moderate transporting and stooping activities; manual dexterity; clear, understandable speech, visual and hearing acuity are required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Engineering Technician II role is the full journey-level class within the Engineering Technician series. This class is distinguished from the Engineering Technician I by the assignment of the full range of duties. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from a Senior Civil Engineer; and technical and functional supervision from professional level engineering staff or the Senior Engineering Technician as appropriate. May exercise technical supervision over lower-level technical engineering personnel.

Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, including or supplemented by courses in algebra, geometry, and trigonometry is required.
Experience:
Two (2) years of experience in engineering work requiring knowledge of field, surveying, and office engineering practices and procedures, equivalent to an Engineering Technician I with the City of Fairfield, is required.
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required. Possession of a valid equivalent is acceptable during the application process.
Examples of Duties
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Check subdivision final and parcel maps and construction plans for compliance with City Planning and Engineering Department requirements and adherence to accepted construction practices.
- Prepare plans, specifications, profiles, cross sections, and make horizontal and vertical alignments and other computations for street, curb and gutter, sewer, water, storm drain, and park construction projects.
- Serve as a survey party member, in gathering and compiling field data for planning and public works improvements, staking improvement sites for construction, and performing property boundary surveys.
- Reproduce plans and assemble plans and specifications.
- Maintain records required for field and office drawing and survey work.
- Prepare reports as required.
- Assist with development review process.
- Issue encroachment permits.
- Issue flood zone determination letters and general information.
- Perform related work as assigned.
Knowledge & Abilities
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- City of Fairfield Standard Specifications and Details.
- Subdivision Map Act.
- Accepted construction safety standards and regulations.
- Basic engineering principles and practices used in engineering drawing and field survey work.
- Working knowledge of computer aided design and drafting.
Ability to:
- Use a variety of drafting instruments.
- Read and interpret subdivision maps, parcel maps and construction plans.
- Use surveying instruments to make precise survey measurements, and make and interpret survey calculations.
- Assist in the use of surveying equipment.
- Perform a variety of office and field technical engineering work.
- Establish and maintain good working relationships with employees, the general public, contractors, developers, property owners, and others involved in private and public improvement projects.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Use computer for basic applications.
- Acquire working knowledge of City of Fairfield Standard Specifications and Details.
- Prepare accurate reports.
- Interpret and prepare legal descriptions for parcels of land.
- Operate and use CADD system.
