About the Department
The Industry Expansion Solutions is a major component of the State's economic development operation by diffusing engineering, science, knowledge and technology to North Carolina industry, business, and public agencies for the enhancement of quality, productivity, and environmental protection. This is accomplished by utilizing professional education and technical assistance that meet the needs of business, industry, and healthcare professionals. Advocating the use of engineering science and technology through best practices promotes corporate growth and the creation of quality products and services.
Essential Job Duties
Primary duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Technical Service: This position typically provides hands-on technical assistance to clients. The solution to a client's problem will come from the incumbent's experience with the process, material, or product and can be frequently completed in the client's facilities. A client contract for services shall be rendered under the University guidelines for agreement.
  • Facilitation: The ability to facilitate face-to-face & virtual engagements and coach clients on process improvement is necessary for success. Listening to the client, understanding their current business system and future needs, and keeping an open mind to multiple paths to achieve goals is key. This position requires the ability to effectively present in both informal and formal learning settings.
  • Instructional Design: This position may also be required, at times, to assist with the restructuring of existing training material and the design and development of new training material using best practices in adult learning techniques. This is most often accomplished using Microsoft Office tools (i.e. Word, PowerPoint).
  • Economic Impact: This position supports the efforts to administer an objective evaluation system that measures the impact of IES programs to the economic benefit to the clients and to the state. The position supports both the survey process and the production of annual or other reports of program impact that is distributed to stakeholders at the federal, state, and local level.
  • Administration: This position has administration duties that include providing scope of work for proposals, entering project information and updates into SalesForce, submitting travel expenses, scheduling, and other normal business reports. This position is required to attend necessary meetings and travel as required by the client, IES supervisor, and Executive Director.

Other Responsibilities
The Extension Specialist will exercise broad guidance over designated technicalproduct(s) regions, and support activities under the leadership of the Executive Director and advisement of Senior Leadership using established policy as guidance.
The Extension Specialist will exercise discretion and judgment when making adecision. Standard NCSU and IES guidelines, practices and policies will be followed for routine work. Normal and authoritative advice will be sought to insure an informed decision.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree and some industry experience (i.e. internships, co-ops, capstone projects will count toward this requirement)

Other Required Qualifications
  • Understanding of process improvement or manufacturing engineering (i.e. time studies, factory flow, layouts plans, lean manufacturing)
  • Interest or experience in coaching and facilitating in business environments.
  • A strong work ethic and a willingness to travel are required.
  • High proficiency in the use of a personal computer is required.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • The ability to coordinate multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • The physical ability for a wide range of activities is needed, such as standing, driving, walking, room setup, etc.
  • Ability to work self-directed
  • This position requires travel within North Carolina throughout the work week.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineering or manufacturing experience(will accept multiple co-ops or internships)
  • Process Simulation Modeling
  • Application of or exposure to Robotics, Automation and Advanced manufacturing (Industry 4.0) tools (i.e. cyber, additive technologies etc.)
  • CAD or 3D modeling experience is desirable
  • Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt
  • Continuous Improvement Methodologies skillset (Standard Work, TWI, TPM, SMED, Kata, Kepner-Tregoe etc.)
  • Problem solving abilities, mechanical perspective, hands on application.
  • Exposure to quality core tools (i.e. FMEA, RCA, SPC, MSA, and Control Plans)
  • Understanding of quality management systems.
