  • This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).

  • New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

About the Work Unit

The North Program Loveland Residency is responsible for the design, construction, and management of projects within Region 4 of the Colorado Department of Transportation.


About the Position

As an Engineering Assistant III, you will work under the supervision and guidance of a licensed Professional Engineer, applying and implementing engineering theories, principles, and standards to highway projects. The position will carry out established work processes and operations pertaining to design plans and construction inspection/oversight and learn to take on progressively more complex assignments.


Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Learn to prepare quality engineering plans, specifications, and estimates (PS & E) for roadway designs by applying current engineering principles and theories, design specifications, and Federal, State, and local design standards to develop safe, efficient, and economical project designs. This includes supporting the Engineer regarding layouts, alignments, standard designs, tabulation, specifications, quantities, acquisitions and clearances. Utilize a variety of software, including Gmail, Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads; AASHTOware Project; MS Word, Excel, and Project, SAP and PMO specific computer software programs.

  • On active construction projects, learn to act as field project tester of materials incorporated into the project. Materials include soils, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), concrete and other associated items. Enter all test related material into LIMS system. Assure that all requirements of CDOT Field Material Manual are met. Document all items incorporated in the work according to the CDOT Field Materials Manual.

  • Provide office engineering support by learning to prepare a complete and accurate account of pay quantities, project activities, correspondence, conditions, and problem resolutions by completing various written and computer-generated reports. Learns to compile and tabulate delivery tickets, as well as verify yield requirements. Obtain dimensions of placed, constructed, and/or installed items and calculates required areas, volumes, etc. Evaluates contractor materials to determine the acceptability to be incorporated or used in the constructed project.

  • Assist the Project Engineer in the final checking of plan sheets, project specifications, project correspondence, and payments both during design and construction phases of projects. Assure accuracy and compliance with established standards and policies on all plans by CDOT staff and consultants.

  • Learn to apply the plans, specifications, M & S Standards, and project notes in the inspection of contractors' work to assure conformance to specifications by assisting in performing detailed inspections, and maintaining proper documentation.

  • Certifications to be obtained include CAPA, ACI, WAQTC, Radiological Nuclear Safety, LIMS and Sitemanager.

  • Other job duties as assigned.


Work Environment:

  • Primarily 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, with opportunity for a flexible schedule

  • After a training period, you will likely work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work

  • Approximately 50% spent in the field, 50% spent in the office

  • Travel may be required during work hours to report to project sites to perform testing and inspection, and for training

  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Minimum Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or GED;

  • AND at least two (2) years of full-time experience in any combination of the following: working in building or skilled trades (e.g., welder, utilities, electrician, carpenter); assisting in the computer-aided design of plans or blueprints for architecture, construction, engineering, manufacturing, and/or survey; monitoring construction projects, conducting materials testing, or inspecting projects.


Substitutions:

  • Satisfactory completion of coursework from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Project Management, Construction Management, Drafting or a field closely related to the Major Job Duties may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience. A copy of an official or unofficial transcript must be submitted to verify this coursework.

  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment;
  • Strong communicator including interpersonal, written, and speaking skills;
  • Analytical thinking, research, and problem solving skills;
  • Strong attention to technical detail;
  • Being open to change and new information; adapting behavior and work methods in response to changing conditions or unexpected obstacles;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Project), Gmail and Google Applications, Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads, AASHTOware Project, SAP, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
