Central San's Planning and Development Services Division is seeking an Engineering Assistant III. This position supports Planning and Development Services and includes work related to development, plan review, entitlements, and annexations. Additional work includes working with individual property owners to facilitate their participation in voluntary financing programs and working as a liaison with groups of property owners to form voluntary assessment districts.
Typical responsibilities include:
- Responding to inquiries and requests from property owners and the general public requiring the use of tact, judgment, and the interpretation of standards, policies, and procedures.
- Preparing letters and other forms of correspondence.
- Working with admin staff to ensure that correspondence, documents, and reports are filed or archived in an online document management system.
- Providing general guidance and specific information to engineers, developers, contractors, the public, and staff on Central San code, Standard Specifications, District Ordinances, and policies.
- Conducting reviews of engineering plans submitted by developers, contractors and consultants for conformance with Central San code, Standard Specifications, and District Ordinances.
- Tracking plan check and permit progress in Central San's permitting system and providing responses to inquiries about the status of projects.
- Preparing a variety of clear and concise administrative reports, as assigned.
- Contacting other agencies, developers, property owners, and contractors regarding construction and development in Central San's service area.
The ideal candidate is someone who:
- Possesses solid customer service experience and provides premium customer service to the public;
- Possesses excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with a strong attention to detail.
- Can work independently to meet deadlines and can identify potential scheduling schedule conflicts.
- Possesses confidence using various computer programs to perform research, analysis, and calculations.
- Is confident reading and interpreting maps, engineering and construction plans, and drawings.
- Is able to interpret and provide information regarding standards, procedures and conformance with District codes.
- Possesses a collaborative, inclusive, and team-oriented approach to problem-solving and decision-making.
- Ideally has some knowledge of and experience with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA)
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. College-level coursework in engineering, geography, mathematics, or a related field is highly desirable.
Experience:
Three (3) years of full-time experience in engineering support, drafting, inspection, planning or GIS work including twelve months of experience equivalent to that of an Engineering Assistant II at the District.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License. A valid out-of-state driver's license will be accepted during the application process. Must possess a valid California Driver's License within 90 days of appointment.

The most qualified candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process. Human Resources shall determine the examination steps to be used for this recruitment. The steps may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, practical examination, application screening, and/or oral board examination. One or more of these steps may be used and in any order. At the end of the testing process, candidates passing all of the examination steps will have their names placed on an eligibility list. The list is valid for six months and may be extended up to an additional six months at the request of the hiring department. The list established by this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification.
