  • This position is covered by the Partnership Agreement between the State of Colorado and Colorado Workers for Innovative and New Solutions (COWins).
  • New employees to the State will be paid biweekly. There are 26 biweekly pay periods in a year.

#LI-POSTThere is one position available that will be filled at either the Engineer-in-Training II (EIT II) or Engineer-in-Training III (EIT III) level.

About the Position
This position is in CDOT's Region 1 Central Engineering Program in Denver. As the Hydraulic Engineer-in-Training, you will provide hydraulic engineering support to the Region. This includes providing construction and maintenance support and developing and reviewing hydraulic plans and specifications to ensure that transportation projects meet or exceed professional, state, and federal standards by applying hydraulic engineering theories, principles, practices, and judgment in project design. You will perform design calculations, analysis, and supporting documentation for draining water through, around, and over CDOT transportation infrastructure, document compliance with water-related regulations, review and comment on drainage designs with other agencies and consultants, support the preparation of floodplain compliance documents, review the adequacy of drainage designs of others, and support Project Engineers and Resident Engineers with technical assistance in preparing analyses and designs on roadway design, rehabilitation, and repair projects. All work performed will be overseen by a licensed professional engineer.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Provide hydraulic engineering support for all assigned CDOT, Local Agency, and Permits projects and submittals;
  • Review drainage construction plans, specifications, and reports prepared by consultants, local entities, and private developers to make sure that designs meet appropriate federal, state, and local engineering standards;
  • Work with Project Managers in developing work scopes, person-hour estimates, consultant section input, and hydraulic deliverables for CDOT projects;
  • Apply current engineering hydraulic principles, theories, design specifications, applicable design standards, and engineering expertise to develop safe, efficient, and economical hydraulic designs;
  • Perform analysis of roadway and bridge geometry, river modeling and structure opening recommendations, and floodplain mapping;
  • Propose and implement design alternatives or concepts and make recommendations based on professional engineering judgment;
  • Prepare/oversee the preparation of design drawings using ORD;
  • Use various hydraulic related software packages (HY-8, HEC-RAS, WMS, etc.);
  • Perform field visits for project scoping, site inspection, and investigation related to drainage maintenance problems; quickly identify the source and/or contributing factors of drainage related issues, identify effective solutions, and prepare engineering guidance to aid in correcting the problem;
  • Participate in various committees;
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Work Environment:
  • Your schedule will primarily be 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, but we are flexible to meet your work/life balance needs while ensuring CDOT business needs are met.
  • You will likely work a hybrid schedule with a combination of in-office and remote work.
  • Approximately 10% spent in the field, 90% spent in the office
  • Travel required during work hours throughout Metro Denver/Front Range
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
EIT II Starting Salary Range: $68,988-$75,876/year. The EIT II level is non-exempt, eligible for overtime.
EIT III Starting Salary Range: $76,056-$83,664/year. The EIT III level is exempt, not eligible for overtime.
EIT II Minimum Qualifications
  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.

EIT II Substitution:
  • Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the enrollment as an Engineer Intern.

EIT III Minimum Qualifications
  • Current enrollment as an Engineer Intern by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.

AND
  • One year of civil engineering experience related to hydraulics.

EIT III Substitutions:
  • Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors will substitute for the enrollment as an Engineer Intern.
  • Civil Engineering education in addition to that required for enrollment as an Engineer Intern will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

  • A current valid driver's license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
  • It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training must obtain registration as a Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of the initial appointment to the position.

Preferred Qualifications
Theexceptional applicantwill possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
  • For the EIT III level it is expected that you are within one year of being able to obtain your Professional Engineer license;
  • Hydraulic engineering experience, specifically pertaining to highway drainage projects;
  • Civil engineering design and construction knowledge and experience, including current working knowledge of civil engineering processes, theories, laws, principles, conceptual models, and best practices;
  • A history of progressively responsible highway design project management experience;
  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy;
  • Strong analytical, reasoning, problem solving, and decision making ability;
  • Excellent planning, organizational, time and project management skills and experience;
  • Excellent facilitation, presentation, and communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Experience managing budgets to ensure cost effectiveness of projects or programs;
  • Proven ability to collaborate and build relationships;
  • Ability to partner with professionals, consultants, vendors, stakeholders, and staff, with sensitivity to their needs and priorities;
  • Experience negotiating with individuals or groups to find mutually acceptable solutions; experience building consensus through give and take;
  • Flexibility/adaptability in response to changing conditions or unexpected obstacles;
  • Ability to work effectively in independent and team situations;
  • Passion for safety;
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access), Google applications and Gmail, MS Project, MicroStation, ORD, familiarity with SAP, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
  • Experience with the Watershed Modeling System (WMS), Surface Modeling System (SMS), HEC-RAS, SRH-2D, the FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox, HEC-HMS, HY-8, and other similar hydrologic/hydraulic software;
  • Familiarity with the most recent versions of the suite of Hydraulic Engineering Circulars published by FHWA;
  • Ability to produce major hydraulic structure design, including floodplain encroachment considerations, fish passage requirements, bank stabilization, foundation scour countermeasures, proposed bridge freeboard/vertical alignment, and stream/bank grading plan production.
