Engineer A:
Education and/or Equivalent Experience:
- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job, plus four (4) years of engineering experience acquired before and/or after licensing as a professional engineer.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
- Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Texas; or if currently licensed in another state, must have the ability to obtain a Texas P.E. license within six (6) months of employment.

Responsibilities:
As a Fire Protection Engineer you’ll be at the forefront of ensuring compliance of the Austin Fire Code for a variety of exciting construction projects. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Expedited Plan Review: Collaborate with a diverse team of eight plan reviewers to facilitate reduced plan review turnaround times and issuance of building permits. Dive into the intricacies of building permit plan submittals, ensuring they comply with the Austin Fire Code.
- Technical Expertise: Perform the review of engineering design projects, bringing your technical proficiency in the application of the International Fire Code, International Building Code, and various NFPA standards. Tackle complex and priority projects to verify that all pertinent fire code issues are addressed.
- Design Collaboration: Participate in preliminary design meetings with design professionals to identify required fire protection systems and features. Engage in discussions about acceptable design options for technically complex building projects.
- Alternate Methods of Compliance: Showcase your expertise by evaluating and making recommendations for proposed Alternate Methods of Compliance, ensuring equivalency with prescriptive code provisions.
- Interdepartmental Coordination: Collaborate with the Austin Fire Department inspectors, providing technical assistance and clarification on approved building plans and installed conditions. Coordinate code interpretations and applications with other City departments and agencies, including the City of Austin Development Services Department.
