General Notes
This position will work on several projects related to Energy Economics and value chain analysis. It will likely be part of a new funding opportunity expected in 2024-2026 on:
  • Upstream gas investment valuation with emerging and sustainable solutions, associated with upstream natural gas production activities and emission reporting and measuring.
  • Hydrogen sector's market research and techno-economic analysis, and value chain network modeling, covering production, transportation, storage and distribution.
  • Research defining the potential demand applications and market potential through secondary research and data mining, including renewable natural gas and ammonia value chain.
  • Develop data analysis and policy research that relates to a range of emerging technology solution either in low carbon energy and storage.
  • Create data analysis and market point of view on regional infrastructure buildout and assist in developing route-to-market models for low carbon intensity solutions, like clean hydrogen, clean ammonia and potentially other related topics.
Purpose
This position is designed to perform market research and data mining for techno-economic analysis, data analysis and model building for value chain analysis, NPV analysis model, and review existing literature to gather data and assumptions.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct independent research, create data analysis and economic models, develop proposals, review and summarize existing literature in order to market research and data collection for demand, production and transportation of hydrogen and other low-carbon energy solutions.
  • Present research to IA members and other stakeholders at IA meetings and short courses.
  • Publish in BEG Reports of Investigation and peer reviewed international journals.
  • Develop high performance computing applied to simulations that form the basis for these studies.

Required Qualifications
PhD in engineering or economics. Prior research experience with the energy market or energy technologies. Prior research experience with large databases and quantitative models. Documented capabilities in programming like Python, R, or VBA. Proficient in Excel and PowerPoint. Experience in techno-economic analysis and NPV models.

PhD must have been received within 3 years of date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications
PhD in Energy Economics, or strong engineering background with deep knowledge and experience in techno-economic analysis and market dynamics. Prior research in hydrogen market space. Prior research in natural gas, electricity or petrochemicals.

Salary Range
$65,000+ depending on qualifications.

Working Conditions

Retirement Plan Eligibility:
The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
