Job Description
The primary goal of this position is to safely operate heavy equipment at a productive level to help the Engineering community validate machine components and/or software. This is accomplished by reporting issues encountered during operation of Backhoe Loaders (BHL), Mini Hydraulic Excavator (MHE), Small Track Type Tractors (STTT), and Small Wheel Loader (SWL), and Work Tools (WT) core product groups located at the Clayton Machine Development Center (CMDC). The selected candidate will be required to log machine activities and any issues noted daily. Urgent issues are communicated to the Team Leader as soon as discovered. These issues may be related to physical designs or machine performance.
Typical endurance applications for core products include excavating and backfilling, grading, simulated truck loading, loaded carry, dozing applications, and lifting/craning operations. Machines can also be used to operate different tools associated with the Work Tools group as needed.
The candidate will also provide general feedback and assessments on machine and tool performance as competency is gained. Within 6-12 months the selected candidate is expected to become skilled in a variety of applications and support testing. This requires the ability to understand machine behavior and articulate this information to co-workers and/or engineers. Therefore, the selected candidate should have an eagerness to learn and advance their skill set and should also feel comfortable communicating the issues found, both verbally and through written logs.
Along with reporting issues, the selected candidate will be required to wash and inspect machines at least weekly. Common areas of inspection include looking for structural cracks, checking bolted joints to ensure they are intact, and looking for hose and harness rubs.
The selected candidate for Endurance Operator can also be requested to make small repairs and/or service machines. Typical expectations are to check tension and adjust tracks, check air pressure and inflate tires, change broken grease fittings, change/clean engine air filters, troubleshoot leaks, tighten any loose hoses, and have the ability to sign service items and other parts out of inventory for such needs.
Other responsibilities include helping clean and maintain the work environment, which includes the equipment used, the breakroom, and the outside work area.
Required:
Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods
Ability to perform repetitive operations
Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.
18 months functional area experience (machine operation)
Desired:
Basic understanding of mechanical systems
Experience assembly or repairing BHL, MHE, STTT, and SWL machines
Good communication skills; both oral and written
Initiative and maturity to work independently
Candidate must take safety very seriously and respect the power of the machine. He/she must be willing to be instructed and/or corrected to address potential safety concerns while maintaining a positive attitude.
