Job description

Job Summary
Provide technical medical assistance to physician, nurse, and supportive patient care in
an acute care setting. The ED tech position must communicate with the RN and
physician regarding patient/family observations in an ongoing fashion to assist in the
treatment of patients. All treatment and patient care must be coordinated under the
supervision of the ED RN and/or the ED provider.
Discharge education must be performed and documented by the ED RN.
All medication administration, including all oral and IV medications, is prohibited unless
specifically ordered and directly supervised by the ED physician.

Essential Job Functions
1. Performs vital signs and documents in patient chart.
2. Administers oxygen; performs basic life support airway support, including ventilation,
use of airway adjuncts, and jaw thrust.
3. Proficient with chest tube, CPAP and ventilator setup and operation.
4. May insert of Foley catheters upon completion of department training and
competency validation.
5. Performs oral, endotracheal and tracheostomy suctioning.
6. Performs peripheral IV and IO initiation.
7. Performs initiation of crystalloid fluid via IV.
8. Performs splinting and wound care including dressing and steri-strips.
9. Responsible for patient specimen collections which may include, IV blood draws,
nasal swabs, point of care monitoring, etc.
10. Performs suture/staple removal upon completion of department training and
competency validation.
11. Performs 12-Lead EKGs.
12. Demonstrates effective use of clinical strategies to ensure patient and associate
safety.
13. Collaborates with medicine, nursing and other health care professionals regarding
plan of care, follow-up and evaluation for the patient and family
14. Assists with the following procedures and within ASH defined ED Tech scope of
practice: procedural sedation, central line insertions, lumbar punctures, defibrillation,
cardioversion, chest tube insertion, thoracentesis, arterial lines, suturing and pelvic
exams.
15. Performs accurate and timely documentation of all tasks, observations, and
procedures performed.
16. Performs ED clerical duties, including but not limited to, patient registration, order
entry, and patient status changes, discharges, and transfers.
17. Utilizes SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) for
communication.
18. Assists with quality improvement, safety and regulatory functions as directed.

19. Participates in formal self-evaluation by identifying areas of strengths, limitations,

department meetings.
21. Attends all in-services and department education as required.
22. Seeks assistance from other professional resource persons to improve skills and
knowledge.

and the working environment.
18.1 Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous
quality improvement while performing day to day activities of the
position.

24. Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
Education: High School Diploma or the equivalent.
Licensure: LPN license or EMT Certification (CO state or National Registry, EMTI or
EMTP preferred)
Experience, Training, Knowledge: Two (2) years experience in an acute care setting
preferred.
Salary Range $18.00-$33.46
Physical Requirements
Requires lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling up to fifty (50) pounds; stooping,
kneeling, and/or crouching; standing and walking more than five (5) hours per day; visual
acuity in order to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration,
infection, also to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.; audio acuity, in order to
correctly distinguish various body sounds, i.e. respiration's, heart sounds, bowel sounds,
also to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment which would
indicate dangerous or improper operation.
Working Conditions/Environmental Exposures
Environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, needles, needle containers, sharps,
blood, body fluids, various infectious/communicable diseases, infectious medical waste,
radiation, and/or radioactive materials and/or radioactive waste, proximity to moving
mechanical parts. Protective clothing/equipment may be necessary
