LOCATION: Elementary Level
The Teacher Consultants will support a cohort of district elementary school buildings. This person will work with classroom teachers to develop inclusive and innovative learning methods for K-5 students with Individualized Educational Plans. They will serve as an advisor to special education and general education instructional staff in the area of academic achievement, classroom management, and the creation of equitable teaching and learning materials to support students with disabilities. This includes providing disability specific support and services, problem solving and crisis prevention and intervention. The Teacher Consultant will be involved in supporting instruction in special education programs, daily activities and working closely with teachers, families, and students.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1. Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with at least one special education endorsement.
2. Master's degree in education or a field of study related to special education.
3. Three years of successful teaching experience with not less than two years teaching students with a disability in a special education classroom.
4. Possess or immediately qualify for Teacher Consultant approval from the Michigan
Department of Education.
5. Professional communication and interpersonal skills.
6. Extensive experience with, and knowledge of, behavior management principles.
7. Extensive experience with, and knowledge of, curriculum adaptations.
8. Demonstrated record of collaborative teamwork.
9. Demonstrated skills in parent consultation.
10. Proficient skills in written communication.
11. Extensive experience in the IEP process
12. Experience in mediation and collaborative problem solving.
13. Experience with and knowledge of UDL framework and assistive technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provides consultation support to elementary district buildings.
2. Completes academic testing, progress reports and other necessary record keeping.
3. Consults with special and general education personnel.
4. Build capacity of elementary special staff to provide instructional services to students who are enrolled in special education programs using research based tools and strategies.
5. Works with members of a multi-disciplinary evaluation team to assist in the evaluation students suspected of having a disability/requiring an IEP or in the re-evaluation process.
6. Facilitates/organizes educational needs for students with complex needs in general education environment.
7. Provide professional development for staff as needed.
8. Supports building teams as they evaluate, complete special education documentation, build behavior plans and implement specific educational plans.
9. Meet with building teams and parents to address issues, problem solve, and build/modify support plans.
10. Consults and communicates with elementary special education supervisor, ASD consultant and coordinator, elementary resource room teachers and ancillary staff.
11. Support elementary level students in county center based programs as needed (attend IEPs/parent meetings).
12. Attend elementary resource room teachers' meetings, support and facilitate as necessary.
13. Performs other tasks as may be assigned by the supervisors.
14. Bending, lifting, and overhead work required.
REPORTS TO: Supervisor of Elementary Special Education
EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Certificated Personnel.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

The fingerprinting is conducted by a third party and is at the expense of the applicant. Cost for fingerprinting is approximately $70.00.
