Teaching roles are 10-month positions, which are exempt and therefore not eligible for overtime pay under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

About the Social & Emotional Learning Specialist Position


The Social and Emotional Learning Specialist works with students and staff to ensure positive social interactions and academic success in the Capital City Lower School. The position works with the Principal, Director of Student Services, and Wellness Team, and staff to create a positive school community. The Social and Emotional Learning Specialist will work to build and deepen a positive school climate and culture by building the capacity of staff and students to understand and demonstrate the five core competencies of social-Emotional Learning: Self Awareness, Self- Management, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Responsible Decision Making. The Social and Emotional Learning Specialist reports to the Lower School Principal.


The Social & Emotional Learning Specialist's will be required to


  • Maintain a strong vision for school culture that incorporates Capital City’s community values. Consistently and frequently communicate this vision to students and staff and make it part of the life of the school.
  • Provide implementation support for our SEL Second Step curriculum.
  • Utilize National School Reform protocols to investigate problems through an equity lens and propose solutions.
  • Lead staff in Restorative Justice Circles to provide students and staff with needed support.
  • Lead professional development on the 5 SEL core competencies, trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices.
  • Making decisions in a strategic way, balancing building strong relationships and maintaining high expectations for character for staff and students.
  • Analyze discipline data, survey data, and school-wide trends to identify needs. Share with administrators and teachers and use data to improve practice.
  • Design and facilitate SEL workshops for families and staff.
  • Provide lead and modeling of SEL lessons to whole classes and small groups.
  • Meet regularly with the Principal to coordinate plans for intervention and support
  • Work with the school counselor to conduct mediation sessions with students when needed, as determined by administrators.
  • Notify appropriate personnel and agencies immediately, and following established procedures when there is evidence of social conditions, potential suicide.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal.


Desired Qualifications:


Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience teaching and/or in administration is required. Candidates should have experience working with young learners (preK-4th grade) and diverse populations. Expertise with trauma-informed practices, social and Emotional Learning, and experience with implementing SEL curriculum with elementary-aged students is a necessity.


In addition to the above requirements, staff members must meet the requirements of all hires at Capital City including a criminal background check.
