Electronic Materials Engineer
(Contract for Client)

SIGMADESIGN has collaborated with a consumer electronics company seeking an experienced Electronic Materials Engineerto join their facility in Redmond, WA. This position is a contract with an expected duration of 12 months.

Primary Function:
As an Electronic Materials Engineer you will develop new materials that can improve the performance of next-generation human-computer interaction devices/technologies. You will be expected to work closely with the materials testing, modeling, system design and integration teams to develop novel polymer materials with target properties.
Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:
  • Developing materials both in-lab and with vendor partners for various functions within integrated electronics devices, including substrates/interlayer dielectrics, thermal interface/spreader materials, and moisture barriers to improve performance outcomes, including thermal, manufacturing, reliability and functional density
  • Materials characterization and sub-system testing of in-house or partner fabricated samples, including characterizing chemical properties, thermal properties, mechanical properties, electrical properties, moisture transmission, and surface topology
  • Balancing efforts between internal formulation developments and developing with material supplier partners
  • Collaborate with research scientists and engineers from broad disciplines to translate complex technology needs into appropriate experimental efforts and research directions
  • Working within a chemistry/materials and clean-room laboratory environment with good safety practices and technical rigor
     
Education and Experience: (Knowledge, skills, & abilities)
  • BS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related technical field
  • 2+ years working on materials developments for one or more of dielectric substrate materials (FPC and/or RDL), thermal interface materials or thermal spreaders, moisture barrier materials
  • 2+ years working on developing materials with or at material vendors or manufacturing partners for consumer electronic devices
  • Experience balancing material property trade-offs within materials formulations to balance target properties and other component/sub-system requirements towards application spaces of flexible/stretchable electronics, thermal dissipation, or moisture barrier/IPX standards
  • Experience with materials characterization techniques, including TMA, TGA, DSC, FTIR, rheology, tensile testing, peel/adhesion testing, 4-point probe, thermal conductivity, Dk/Df measurements, WVTR measurements or similar
  • Experience with photolithography, wet etching, process characterization/optimization and running DOEs
  • Experience collaborating and communicating effectively in team settings.
  • Strong written and verbal English language communication skills.
  • Excellent teamwork/interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, both within and outside one's own work group.
  • Demonstrate commitment and adherence to SIGMADESIGN Core Values.
  • Pass a post-offer background verification.

Desired Experience:
  • Understanding material structure/property relationships, characterization methods, and material formulations of dielectric substrate materials used in electronics semiconductor and packaging applications, especially towards multi-layer RDL & FPC build-ups
  • Experience with dielectric and metallization additive/subtractive wafer-based fabrication processes, ideally for redistribution layer (RDL) fabrication
  • High degree of lab safety understanding, able to drive for lab safety excellence within chemistry/clean-room environment
  • Experience with colloidal systems and formulations, nano/micro-material composite systems, surface functionalization, dispersion stability, advanced additive/subtractive patterning methods and, with an ability to translate property and manufacturing results into formulation tuning needs
  • Experience with developing materials sets towards flexible/stretchable wearable consumer electronic devices

Work Environment:
Standard lab/production environment. Appropriate safety garments (PPE) must be worn. Occasionally may be required to work in environmental conditions that emulate typical user environments in order to facilitate design testing and validation. Occasionally may be required to travel as required to other facilities, clients or suppliers. Must be able to stand and work as long as 12 hours in different positions. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
