Job description

Duties

As a Electrical Utility Materials Handler, you will:

  • Compare contract documents and bills of lading against materials received using a variety of resources to verify order accuracy.
  • Use computer to determine stock locations and make selections by quantity and stock numbers.
  • Complete appropriate forms relating to stock description, quantity, unit of issue and labeling requirements for incoming and outgoing materials, equipment and commodities.
  • Inspect, fabricate, repair and install storage and shipping items (ex: small crates, pallets and storage bins) using wood, wood composites and substitutes, steel bracing or other appropriate material.
  • Use material handling equipment such as pallet jacks, dollies, and electric lifts to position and/or transport materials prior to and after packing.
  • Fill orders from stock and purchases, verifying accuracy, prepare shipping documents, prepare items (including delicate precision instruments and test equipment) for shipment; load trucks, railcars, etc.
  • Take inventory of stock equipment, instruments, and tools.
  • Compare data relating to item characteristics, descriptions, conditions and quantities against accompanying documents.
  • Uncrate, identify and verify a wide variety of materials, equipment, technical components and commoditie.
  • Maintain stock in good condition; obtain service or recommend disposal of items determined to be unserviceable, uneconomical to repair or unneeded.

  • This position requires a preemployment medical exam, at BPA expense, prior to appointment due to the physical requirements of the position.
  • After employment, this position may be subject to periodic physical examinations, as prescribed by competent medical authority and at BPA expense, if exposed to health hazards.
  • This position requires an initial drug test prior to appointment and random drug or drug and alcohol testing thereafter. Failure to test or a positive result on random drug or drug and alcohol tests conducted after appointment may result in removal from Federal employment.
  • Become familiar with and follow agency rules and regulations such as but not limited to the Warehouse Playbook, BPA Accident Prevention Manual, DOT, EPA, and OSHA regulations applicable to this position.
  • Able to obtain non-electrical worker permit if required.
  • Within one year after appointment be certified for First Aid and CPR provided by BPA and maintain certification thereafter.
  • Subject to call for emergency work at any time.
  • Must pass onsite material handling equipment certification including but not limited to: pickup, flatbed, van-type truck, forklift, overhead crane, and platform lifts which may operate in narrow and constricted warehouses aisles.
  • Able to be fitted for (must be clean shaven) and able to wear protective apparel such as respirators when required for worker safety.

The screen-out element for this position is: Ability to do the work of an Electrical Utility Material Handler is defined as receive, inspect, store, issue/ ship inventory, salvage materials, supplies, parts materials and equipment; use a personal computer to enter orders, track inventory, assemble, complete and print forms; and use a forklift/ man lift/ pick crane to load, unload, and secure materials and equipment for transport without more than normal supervision.
Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
"Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in areas that may be hot, damp, cold, drafty, wet, muddy, or poorly lit. Requires ability to work outside in all weather conditions. Requires working at heights such as from scaffolding, motorized buckets, and ladders on occasion.
Can require travel to remote sites. Occasional work in field areas along transmission corridors where work areas are exposed to sloping ground, drop off and other natural conditions existing in primitive outdoor settings.
Frequent exposure to hazards typical of working around machinery with moving parts. Occasionally work will include high noise levels or exposure to hazardous substances (asbestos, acids, PCB's, pesticides, mercury, solvents, etc.) that could pose a health risk if precautions are not followed and proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is not worn.
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are available. Required to wear various levels of PPE (hearing protection, respiratory protection, hard hats, protective clothing and gloves, safety glasses; knee pads if required, safety harnesses, dielectric boots, insulated rubber or leather gloves).
Proper respiratory apparatus and protective apparel shall be worn when hazardous substances are being handled.

How You Will Be Evaluated
