Position Summary Information

General Summary
The Electrical & Mechanical Technicianperforms electrical work at the journey level in the installation, alteration, maintenance, and repair of electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical systems within the Electrical Mechanical Section. If assigned to the Anaerobic Digestion/Combined Heat & Power (AD/ CHP) facility, shares in the effective operation and maintenance of facility's equipment.
Essential Functions
  • Oversees subordinate Electrical Mechanics
  • Determines reasons for wear and repairs various types of mechanical items such as pumps, compressors, conveyors, screens, valves, fans, etc. and makes appropriate repairs/recommendations for prevention
  • Replaces belts, bearings, couplings, chains, bearings, sprockets, augers, shafts, grease lines and flights as necessary and makes appropriate repairs/recommendations for prevention
  • Installs pumps, motors, pipes, street lights, heaters, exhaust fans, main feeders, conduits, valves, breakers, switchgear, and electrical controls as required
  • Repairs pneumatic and hydraulic control systems on valves and bubbler systems
  • Repairs controls of various voltages and types such as variable speed and synchronous motors
  • Maintains electrical substations up to 69KV
  • Services heating and air conditioning systems
  • Services generators and their associated automatic starting equipment
  • Installs, inspects, tests & repairs a wide variety of other electrical or mechanical equipment
  • Maintains gas collection and treatment equipment as well as gas flaring systems as needed
  • Maintains high and low-pressure steam boilers
  • Maintains and repairs drive units, fuel pumps, air compressors, lump breakers, grinders, scum pumps, off-gas systems, fuel oil tanks, multi-hearth incinerators and pumps
  • Lubricates and paints plant equipment; performs general plumbing and replaces malfunctioning pumps
  • Repairs and maintains water softener systems, cranes, boiler feed pumps, centrifuges, air dryers, re-aeration tanks and pneumatic controls
  • Repairs bar screens and conveyors and replaces couplings
  • Assists Electrical/Mechanical Section Manager in the repair of transformers, high voltage power supplies, and other equipment
  • Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business

Performs other related duties as required
Work Environment And Physical Demands
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather with fluctuating temperatures, climbing ladders, scaffolding, descending underground
  • Exposure to the hazards of working in confined places and to high voltage electrical shock
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the electrical/mechanical trade and theory
  • Thorough knowledge of electrical mechanical construction and maintenance, including installation and/or modification of all sizes of electrical conduit, cables, wires, switches, automatic starting equipment, etc.
  • Some knowledge of electronic repair practices and methods
  • Skill in the use of tools and adjusting defects in electrical and mechanical systems and equipment
  • Ability to work from drawings, schematics and specifications
  • Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions
  • Knowledge of the applicable occupational hazards and safety precautions
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and fluctuating temperatures, climbing ladders, scaffolding, and descending underground, as well as exposure to the hazards of working in confined spaces with high voltage electricity
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 1 to 3 years of experience as an industrial electrician
  • Substation experience that includes repair and servicing equipment such as oil circuit breakers, transformers, roll-out breakers, and switchgear controls (protective relays)
  • Experience in reading electrical one-line drawings, diagrams of high voltage substations and switchgear, interconnecting diagrams, and equipment location drawings of the same equipment
Additional Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver's license with no more than 4 points and the ability to obtain a WSSC Water driver's permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date
  • Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work
  • If assigned to the AD/CHP facility, incumbent(s) must obtain a Maryland 3rd Grade Stationary Engineers License within 4 years
Preferences
  • Experience with high voltage switchgear and substations 2.4 KV or higher
  • Satisfactory completion of an Apprentice Electrical or Apprentice Mechanical Program with applicable technical courses in electrical maintenance procedures or mechanical maintenance procedures, blue prints, schematics, etc.
  • Completion of technical courses in basic electricity, blueprints, and schematics
  • Possession of a Maryland 1st or 2nd Grade Stationary Engineers License
Salary $24.89 - $42.24 per hour
