Job description

As an Electrical Engineering Graduate Associate, you will support our Maritime Engineering, Technology & Sustainment (METS) Business Unit which is responsible for industry-leading capabilities in naval ship and submarine design, systems and engineering services, and production support, logistics and in-service sustainment. This complements Serco’s other engineering capabilities in shipboard, shore and systems installation and upgrade services to the Navy. This is a seasonal part-time position for Summer 2024, based onsite in Alexandria, VA.   

 

You will join a team that is responsible for a multitude of various design efforts on a multitude of different vessels, on the many different US Navy Programs and Contracts, as well as commercial vessels and systems. In your role, you will be utilizing a variety of different tools and software programs to perform analyses and design studies, possibly involving ship hull structure and/or ship components.  You will also assist in preparation of reports to describe analysis and design efforts, being responsible for summarizing results of simulations and design efforts for customers and higher authorities.

 

During your work experience, you will gain exposure to a wide range of teams within the organization including Electrical Engineering, marine engineering, design, procurement and program/project management. In this role, you will:

  • Work on the electrical design of vessels for Federal and commercial customers through various phases of ship design from concept to detailed design.
  • Assist in the design, development, and evaluation design components related to the electric propulsion systems, propulsion and machinery control systems, power generation and distribution systems, various auxiliary electrical systems, and related equipment of marine vessels – design components such as electric plant load analysis; fault current calculations; circuit breaker coordination studies; transient stability analysis; various electrical diagrams including power, lighting, communications; electrical system and equipment specifications for ship new construction, modification, and/or repair.
  • Apply principles and techniques of Electrical Engineering concepts, practices, and procedures within the power system and power electronics fields to accomplish design goals.
  • Aid the preparation of reports to describe analysis and design efforts, including summarizing results of simulations and design efforts.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
    • Preferred fields of study: Electrical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or a related field of study.
  • Ideal candidates are rising sophomores, juniors, seniors, or Spring 2024 graduates.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
