Job Summary

The Safety Inspector is responsible for promoting Health and Safety (HS) stewardship throughout the company while inspecting and providing HS guidance and support to the workforce. Supports the development of HS programs and projects. Ensures that the company maintains compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and local regulations. Promotes a total Health and safety culture of ownership and accountability for the safety of all workers and protection of the environment. Supports and commits to the organization and company’s mission, vision, and values. Responsible for ensuring that all safety legislation is adhered to, and policies and practices are followed. They help implement, monitor, and review the protective and preventative measures that companies are required or choose to follow, and work to minimize operational losses, occupational health problems, accidents, and injuries. Carrying out risk assessments and considering how risks could be reduced. Carrying out daily site inspections to ensure that policies and procedures are being properly implemented and maintained.

Reports to: ESH Safety Manager

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily inspections of assigned areas ensuring that all operations follow Federal, State, and local regulations and AMP United HS policies and procedures; identify HS hazards or deficiencies and initiate corrective action through production supervision.
  • Prepare written reports on inspection results (compliant and non-compliant), certifications, accidents, injuries and illnesses investigations, and employee complaints or concerns.
  • Establish a close working relationship and communicate with customer-assigned safety representatives and department/ship managers regularly.
  • Conducts daily inspections of Vessel’s confined spaces.
  • Certifies confined space entry onboard the Vessel.
  • Keep certificates and records maintained following regulated standards.
  • Safety walks of the work site grounds to ensure company compliance with environmental and safety hazards.
  • Inspects and maintains fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and ear plug dispensing stations.
  • Maintains MSDS/SDS sheets for assigned contract availabilities in progress.
  • Maintains and obtains paint and other installation samples and lab analysis results per assigned availabilities.
  • Conduct breathing air surveillance inspections.
  • Able to calibrate, use, and operate Air Sampling instruments/meters as needed.
  • Ensure inspection of scaffolding systems daily before commencement of work.
  • Conduct Grade D breathing air test.
  • Conduct Industrial lift Equipment spot checks for licenses and ODCL (Operator Daily Check List) completion.
  • Helps create and edit new work instructions, procedures, or training materials and participates in training events (leading and attending).
  • Acquire and Maintain a Competent Person’s Certification while employed as an AMP United Safety Observer.
  • Report all unsatisfactory conditions to appropriate personnel and the EHS management team for correction.

Minimum Qualifications

  • OSHA 10
  • OSHA 30 (preferred)
  • Minimum High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Competent Person - Able to maintain annual Competent Person certification and other training related to scope of work.

Knowledgeable of

  • Applicable Federal, State, and local HS regulations (1915, 1910, EPA).
  • Presentation techniques for HS training.
  • Techniques used to recognize HS hazards and environmental risks.
  • Working with and management of hazardous materials and waste.
  • Ship configuration, shipbuilding techniques, and operations.
  • Safe operational procedures of tools and machinery associated with the work performed by AMP United.
  • Able to think and solve problems, use reference materials, use organizing strategies and use time and resources effectively.
  • Capable of interacting with others; promoting customer satisfaction; respects diversity; resolves conflicts.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively in English in both oral and written applications to successfully interact with management and employees.

Minimum Previous Experience

Knowledge and experience with accident prevention principles, spill mitigation, and their application to industrial operations; to learn techniques of making field inspections, conducting investigations, and identifying hazards; and other relevant skills.

Minimum of 1 year of experience in Heavy Industrial and/or Construction (Preferred).

Additional Requirements

  • Must have a current driver's license.
  • Must be able to gain access to government facilities.

Working Conditions

Must be able to access all work locations, including government and private shipyards and/or vessels. While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to enter confined spaces, work at heights, and in confining or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair. Daily inspections require entering confined spaces, climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing the use of tools, and operating equipment/machinery. Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding. Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. Must be able to handle stressful situations professionally. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds of weight. Visual parameters require the ability to see up close, at a distance, and peripherally, with depth perception and color recognition. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to vapors, gases, dust, welding/burning fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 90% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 90% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering. May be required to travel for company business.
