Job Description
The Education Programs Coordinator supports the Zoo New England mission to inspire people to protect and sustain the natural world for future generations by creating fun and engaging experiences. The Education Program Coordinator is responsible for developing and overseeing summer camp and vacation week programs at Franklin Park Zoo. Summer camp responsibilities include acting as summer camp director, administering camp registration; hiring, training and supervising seasonal camp staff; implementing the camp program in accordance with safety requirements; gathering assessment data; updating curriculum; and developing activities to engage campers throughout the year. In addition, the Education Programs Coordinator assists the education department in facilitating school programs. Programs include both virtual and in-person learning opportunities such as classes, tours, and community science efforts. Many programs require holding live animals. The Education Programs Coordinator is expected to participate in occasional special event programs on evenings and weekends.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Act as Camp Director for the summer ZooCamp.
- Administer Summer Camp, including curriculum, instruction and evaluation.
- Hire and supervise summer camp staff, including training and evaluation.
- Support the education department with facilitation of school programs between September – April
- Create and facilitate family-focused programs at Franklin Park Zoo.
- Develop and sustain relationships with families that participate in camp and vacation week programs.
- Regularly scheduled hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sunday – Thursday during the school year; and Monday-Friday while summer camp is in session. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required. The Education Programs Coordinator is based at Franklin Park Zoo but travels to Stone Zoo as needed.

Minimum Job Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental education or a related field, or equivalent experience
- Minimum of 2 years of positive experience as an informal science/environmental educator
- Previous summer camp experience
- Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and in writing)
- Outstanding customer service skills; able to represent Zoo New England at all levels with professionalism and pride
- Ability to address student groups of all ages and aptitudes
- Flexible team player; ability to work well with Zoo New England staff, project partners, and program participants
- Knowledge of current teaching trends in the environmental education field
- Experience with curriculum development, program implementation, and evaluation
- Ability to multi-task as part of a fast-paced team
- Appreciation of ZNE’s mission and goals
- Valid driver’s license and a driver in good standing
- Able to lift 50 pounds and walk over uneven terrain and in all weather
- Must submit documentation from a physician or clinic showing a negative TB test taken in the last 12 months.
Preferred Job Requirements
- Minimum of 2 seasons of previous experience working as part of the administrative staff for a recreational camp for children
- Prior positive experience with citizen science projects or community-based science projects
- Ability to speak multiple languages
- Previous experience handling and presenting live animals
- Certification in CPR/AED and First Aid
- Previous experience working with Boston youth
