Description:

Under the supervision of the Director and Curator of Special Collections & Archives, the Special CollectionsEducation and Outreach Librarian is responsible for promoting, interpreting, and encouraging the use of the Library’s Special Collections in support of teaching, learning, and research.

This is an exempt position with a pay range of $60,000 - $70,000.

Working in a collegial, dynamic, and user-centered environment, the incumbent will:

  • forge relationships with faculty to encourage the integration of Special Collections into teaching and student research by promoting, developing, and conducting instructional sessions
  • provide reference and research support for Hamilton users and external scholars
  • arrange and describe archival collections to best practices and industry standards and advocate for their use within the classroom
  • work with Special Collections and archives staff in the preparation of finding aids for collections
  • utilize content management systems ArchivesSpace, Airtable, Alma, Archivematica, and others, to increase discoverability and access to archival collections
  • work with Resource and Digital Strategies staff to implement dynamic web-based platforms for online bibliographies relevant to our Special Collections holdings
  • provide basic practical instruction in book arts techniques
  • liaise with the Letterpress Studio for class sessions
  • assist in preparing exhibits and planning programs to promote special collection
  • develop and execute special projects as assigned
  • actively participate in supporting diversity, equity and inclusion in the Hamilton community
  • supervise students as assigned

Responsibilities

  • Supporting the integration of Special Collections materials into the curriculum by faculty and students
  • Research support for Hamilton faculty, students, and outside researchers
  • Creation of finding aids in collaboration with other Special Collections and archives staff
  • Collaboration with metadata and digital strategies staff for facilitation or discovery and access to Special Collections materials 
  • Practical engagement with printing and book arts techniques and Letterpress liaison 
  • Preparation of exhibitions 

Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Library Science or a related field desired.
  • Previous instructional experience in a college-level or higher setting is strongly desirable. Demonstrable commensurate experience would be acceptable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge and facility of book technology and history (i.e. the history of writing, paper, printing, and binding)
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm and commitment to creating effective aids to promote and facilitate discovery of and access to our collections
  • Strong attention to detail in connoisseurship of books, manuscripts, ephemera, visual materials and realia.
  • Ability to engage with, establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff and members of the campus community (i.e. public speaking, presentations)
  • Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion and an understanding of the contributions a diverse workforce brings to the workplace
