The United States Naval Institute
Founded in 1873, the non-profit U.S. Naval Institute (located at but not part of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD) is the independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to global security. The Institute plays a key role in the nation's ongoing discussion of defense and global security policy and aims always to be the organization that tests the conventional wisdom and explores the power of new ideas.
Established in 1898, the Naval Institute Press is the book-publishing department of the U. S. Naval Institute and a member of the Association of University Presses since 1949. The Naval Institute Press publishes 60-70 books and oral histories each year in multiple formats.
Summary
The Acquisitions Assistant assists Senior Acquisitions Editors with project management for the Naval Institute Press' book program. The Acquisitions Assistant manages distinct and critical phases of project development for approximately 40 projects per year, across a range of publication types including textbooks, trade books, scholarly/professional monographs, and digital editions.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Work with authors to prepare manuscripts and artwork for production and review final manuscripts to ensure that preparation guidelines have been followed
- Maintain updated project records in Firebrand's Title Management system and coordinate, in conjunction with the Acquisitions Editor, the peer review process by querying potential reviewers and making sure review process stays on schedule
- Send contracts and tax documents, and act as a liaison to authors for signature and coordinating advance payments
- Assist with preparation of various documents including contracts, publishing plans, and sales sheets
- Research and help identify competing books for Marketing and areas of growth in emerging fields
- Track and oversee permissions clearance
- General administrative responsibilities, including assisting with planning for seasonal deadlines and maintenance of project schedules
- Develop financial projections as requested by editor
- Other duties as assigned by the Press Director
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- Publishing experience as an intern, apprentice, or through an assistantship preferred
- Office/Hybrid - the Naval Institute currently offers a hybrid work environment and requires three days per week in the office
